SHANE'S POV
I stand frozen in shock that they have finally found out who tried to hurt me. It feels freeing yet terrifying to know who was behind the whole thing."Here. Let's go inside and discuss it. It's more complicated than you thought it would be." The detective explains gesturing toward the front door.
Kat and I exchange a terrified look before entering my house. We walk into the he living room and stand there. "Is your mother home? She is the legal guardian and needs to be present when I speak about this information." The detective asks me, looking around. I get jumpy, feeling anxious to know who it is.
"Uh yeah yeah I'll go get her." I fast walk to the other side of the house by the kitchen and find my mom preparing a meal.
"Hey honey, how was the first day back? If you're not ready just tell me." She says, smiling at me.
"Hey, it was interesting to say the least. Um the detective is here and she needs to talk to us immediately." I spit out, gesturing for her to follow me. We get to the living room and join the detective and Kat on the seats.
"What's this about?" My mom asks, looking at each of us.
"We know who tried to hurt your son." The detective tells my mom. We all lean forward with nervousness.
"Well who was it?"
"After combining the evidence and talking to the school we have found that the guilty party is Nate Sanders."My face drops at the mention of that wretched name. I immediately turn to Kat and see her trying to contain her emotions. I don't know whether to start laughing at the irony of this or to be angry at the fact that he is trying to tear my life apart. I start chuckling darkly not believing the words that I just heard.
"You're kidding right? Nate did this to me? That son of a bitch is asking for it I swear!" I stand up not able to stay still.
Not only did someone try to hurt me but it was the guy that I hate with my entire being. This is ridiculous how is this even happening right now?
"Nate? He was always such a sweet boy why would he do this?" My mom tried to comprehend what she heard.
"Because maybe he wasn't as perfect as you thought mom. Maybe because you don't know the things he's done." I say feeling irritated. Kat speaks up, her voice trembling. "Why haven't you done anything? Shouldn't you arrest him or capture him or something? He could have killed Shane!" She stands up beside me the anger radiating off of her.
"That's where the complication comes in. We have to do this tactfully because it we do this wrong, he could get away with it." She explains, trying to calm us.
"What does that mean?" I ask.
"It means we need a confession from him. The evidence may have helped us find him but it won't hold in court by itself." She looks at us. "We need you to get him to confess." She looks between me and Kat with a determined look.
I look at Kat and see hesitation in her eyes. "Are you sure that's a good idea?" Kat asks looking around. "It's the only way we can." The detective assures her. She turns to my mother who has shock in her eyes. "If it's ok with you I'd like to proceed with the plan."
"Do whatever you need to do to catch this son of a bitch." My mom consents patting my back."Ok tomorrow you'll go to school normally, how you do every day and when you can, get him into the court yard and get him to confess, we'll do the rest.
Later that night I walk Kat home needing some fresh air to clear my thoughts. I still can't wrap my head around this. I just wish I knew why he wanted to do this to me. We hated each other, that was obvious but this was a different story.
Kat was extra quiet tonight. "You ok?" I turn to her. "Uh I don't know. I just- I uh- I feel like he's everywhere." She admits.
"I know, many things lead back to him lately. I for one am going to be happy to see him get what he deserves. I mean he deserves worse but jail is fine." I say turning towards her. We reach her front door and face each other. "What do you mean?" She seems nervous.
"Uh-Just that he's done some horrible things." I try to explain. "I'll pick you up tomorrow Kat." I walk away, waving goodbye. That was a close call.----/////------
KAT'S POV
I enter my house and run to my room immediately, breathing heavily. Why is he everywhere? It's like no matter how hard I try I can never wash him off.------/////--------
"Hey Kat, did you hear me?" I jump at the sudden grab of my hand and turn to Shane. We are sat in his parked car in front of the school and I can't stop thinking. "Huh?" I ask, confused.
"I said are you sure you are ok with the change of plans." He scrunches his eyebrows. "You don't have to do it if you're aren't comfortable." He tries to assure me. It's sweet that he's taking a concern in me.
"We want to catch him right? I'll do whatever I gotta do." I try to stop my voice from trembling.
"That doesn't answer my question, Kat." He declares.
"I'll be fine ok. Don't worry." I squeeze his hand back trying to stop his worries.
"Just remember I'm going to be there and the detective is going to be there, you just won't see us yet." He explains.
I nod "Got it."-------////////---------
SHANE'S POV
I study her face trying to see if she's really up for this. She seems determined to do it. As soon as I heard the idea I said no but they kept saying it was the only way the do it. I didn't want to put Kat in the middle of this and now that's exactly where she is.
"Ok, let's just go to school." I say as we both get out of the car and head into the school. We go through the day as we normally would, learning, eating. Only Kat and I don't make jokes or laugh or have any fun whatsoever because of the anxiousness we have building inside of us. After trying to find a time to do the plan for the entire day, we finally find a window of opportunity when we see Nate skipping class and heading into the courtyard like he does everyday. Kat and I both follow behind him before I have to head the other way to find the detective. "Remember, I'm right there." I assure her before leaving.
I run to the other side of the courtyard and find the detective. "Are you sure she had to be the one to do this?" I ask. "Yes. He would never admit what he did to you." She explains.
"Ok it's happening." She points.
I see Kat sneaking up on him, shaking.
"I know what you did Nate." She says, causing him to turn around. He smiles wickedly when he see her. "You're going to have to be a little more specific there, Kat." He steps closer to her and she steps backward. "I know it was you who did this to Shane." She says between clenched teeth.
"I did something to Shane? Is that what he's telling you? That's rich. When you hang out with the trash things can get messed up." He chuckles. I roll my eyes, he's not even trying.
"I know you tried to hurt Shane." She says in his face. He slowly backs her up right against the brick wall so their bodies are against each other. I fight the urge to punch him in the face. "I didn't try to hurt Shane." He caresses her cheek with his fingers. "I tried to kill him." I stand up ready to charge.
"Wait she's still going." The detective notices. "Why! Why would you want to do that?" She ask, staying still under his touch. "Are you sure you want to know that? It might break your heart." He continues to touch her face. "I did it because of...you." He admits. I look up in confusion. That doesn't make sense. What does that even mean?
In my peripheral vision I see the police and detective heading over to arrest him. "Nate Sander you are under arrest for battery, and attempted murder. Anything you say can and ....." They drag him Into the police car and I head straight to Kat. She's still in the exact same place.
"You're shaking." I say, pulling her into my side. She looks up at me. "This is my fault?"
"No this is not you're fault. Whatever he meant by that we will figure it out." I assure her. The detective comes up to us. "This is only the beginning. I'm going to tell you right now there is no guarantee that this will swing our way, but I will do everything in my power to do it." She explains.
"We are taking him to a holding cell. It's not a jail cell but it's a place to keep him as we go through the evidence." She continued.
"I'll keep you updated. Stay safe." She leaves.----/////------//
After dropping Kat off at home, I hung out with her until I knew she was ok."How are you doing?" We walk into her room.
"Ugh." She looks down at herself. "I have to wash the grimy feel of his hands on my face. I feel like they're all over my body." She whines. My heart starts racing at the thoughts going through my head. I try to contain myself. "Ok I'll leave you to it." I say walking up to her. I kiss the side of her forehead gingerly as I hug her and exit her room.
I get into my car and race down the street. I head for the police station with determination.
"I'm here to talk to Nate Sanders." I say to the desk clerk. "This way." He points and brings me face to face with Nate.
"Hello Shane." He smirks.
"We're going to have a little talk."---////------////--//---/////----/////---////----
