SHANE'S POV

My dad has always been a very perplexing topic for me. He wasn't a bad guy, in fact he was great but he wasn't fit to have a kid. At least not when I was first born. He was pretty immature and it caught up with him when my mom told him that she was pregnant. They did split up pretty soon after and I didn't really know him when I was younger but we did eventually reach out to each other and have tried to have a relationship. It's not perfect but at least he wants to have one. Around the time I contacted him he was becoming a Prosecution Attorney. I guess my mom has a type.
He's a pretty good one too. He got promoted faster than most people and he is the youngest in his firm.
Maybe, just maybe he can help.

"Shane?" He squints his eyes at me, pulling me into a hug. "It's great to see you dude. What are you doing here? Is something wrong?" He says once he lets me go.
"Yes, I need your help." I burrow my eyebrows. I contemplate if I should go through with this. Not sure if he'll be able the help.
"With what? What's wrong?" He shuts his front door leading me over the the side of the front porch underneath the flickering lightbulbs.
"It's my girlfriend...she's in trouble." I tell him not knowing any other way to say it.
"You have a girlfriend?" He smiles, placing his hand on my shoulder firmly. "Since when?" He laughs jokingly.
"Since recently." I tell him, shrugging.
"Wait, don't get into trouble with a girl you met recently Shane. You might not know everything." He warns me, shaking his head.
"I didn't just meet her I've known her my entire life. We just recently got together." I try to explain to him, easing his worry.
"Oh, wait is it that girl you used to crush on, what was her name?" He pauses trying to remember. "Oh, little Kat! That's it." He practically jumps at his recognition.
"Yeah, actually it is. How do you know about her?" I wonder knowing he wasn't around that much at that time. "Your mom was telling me about her, and how you like her." He nudges my shoulder teasingly. I chuckle pushing him away.
Our laughter subsides and comes to a empty silence. "Why is she in trouble?" My dad asks his features looking sharp and serious now.

I then proceed to explain to him what happened to her, that I was there and saw it, and that George was going to represent Nate in court. His face contorts into a look of anguish and pity as he listens closely, making a comment here and there.
"I think that's what makes it even worse. To find out that someone who is supposed to be your family believes Nate over Kat." I finish explaining. "She's devastated, she just can't seem to escape him." I shake my head, clenching my jaw tightly.

My dad sits there speechless with raised eyebrows and an unhinged jaw. I can see him trying to process all the information that I threw at him all at once.
After a long while he eventually leans forward shaking his head.
"I-wow I don't even know what to say. I'm so sorry that you guys had to go through that, both of you. I can't imagine how she feels and that must be traumatizing to see that happen to someone and not be able to help." He says in one full breath pausing before shaking his head again.
"I need your help. You work trials like this all the time. Can you help us? Please." I practically beg, knowing that is my last practical hope before I resort to something really bad.
His eyes dart to the right before looking back at me with worry etched into his features.
"I'd like to talk to Kat and your mom first but I think I can help you Shane. I want to help you." He stands up quickly and I follow suit. I go to hug him quickly feeling a wave of relief splash over me. I haven't fixed the problem but I'm getting closer.

"Okay, you should get back home before your mom starts panicking. I'll come by tomorrow and we can all talk about the situation." He promises me.
I nod, smiling at him.
"Thanks dad." I say before making my way down the stairs and to my car.
"Of course Shane."

::::::::
"Honey, are you sure that's a good idea?" My mom looks over at me, clearing the dishes. As soon as I woke up the next morning I went to my mom and told her about last night. She wasn't happy that I snuck out but tried to listen to what I was trying to say.
"Your father isn't the most reliable man out there." She tries to explain to me. I roll my eyes walking over to her. "He changed mom, he's an attorney remember?" I watch her put down the hand towel and look up at me.
"Okay, but only if Kat is okay with all of this." She raises her eyebrow.
"I already called her and told her the entire thing. She said she's willing to try." I admit to mom, lifting my cellphone higher in the air, shaking in slightly.
My mom shakes her head, laughing at me. "If you are one thing it's dedicated Shane." She smiles, brushing my untamed hair back.

I rush over to the door when I hear the chime of the door bell ring through the house. Swinging the door open I come face to face with Kat. A very tired Kat. She's got a maroon hoodie engulfing her and a tired expression etched on her face. Looking as beautiful as ever.
"Hey kitty." I can't help but smile at the sight of her. She steps into the house attempting to smile. "Hi." She says before I lean down and peck her lips quickly.
My mom steps into the living room smiling sadly when she sees Kat standing beside me. "Hey Kat." She pulls her into her embrace. "Jennifer, hi." She says while being squished by my mother.

"When is your father coming Shane?" My mom asks, checking the windows every ten minutes, searching for him outside.
"Why are you so worried mom?" I raise my eyebrow at her jumpiness. Kat, sitting beside me on the couch, also noticed it too. Rubbing my hand up and down her back I smirk shaking my head. I look back over at my mom to see her narrowing her eyes at me.
"I'm not worried, I just haven't seen your father in a long time." She shakes her head, going back upstairs to pace.
I chuckle at how worried she really is to see him again.
"What about you? Are you worried about meeting him?" I turn my attention to Kat, licking my lips.
"Kind of. You know, meeting the parents thing." She laughs nervously. I smile over at her, kissing the side of her head gently. "You don't have to be. He's a pretty chill guy." I explain. She nods, smiling. Hearing footsteps descending the stairs we both snap our heads over to see Alex coming down the stairs. He stands at the frame of the door pointing behind him with his thumb, his face scrunched up in confusion. "Why is mom pacing around her room?" He looks over at me.
"Um my dad is coming over. He's going to help Kat with...the whole court situation." I explain to him. He nods, smiling.
"Cool I haven't seen Chase in a long time." He refers to my dad. He really gets along with everybody.

After hanging around the living room anxiously I finally hear the door bell ring. I rush over to the door, swinging it open. "Hey dad." I greet him letting him inside the house.
"Hey Shane." He says before looking over to see everyone's eyes on him.
"Chase, it's great to see you again." My mom stands up reluctant to embrace him. "You too Jennifer." He smiles down at her.
"Alex, hey." He fist bumps him before turning his attention over to the couch setting his eyes on Kat.
I go over to her, standing to her side as he makes his way to her.
"You must be Kat." He says with a small smile, putting his hand out towards her. She looks at it for a moment before shaking his hand in return. "Hi, it's great to meet you." He says. "You too." She says with a small smile.
