The rest of the day went quite smoothly, except a few unnecessary comments from Dylan and his friends. But they were easy to brush off, I had friends and I was happy. Eloise saved me a seat at lunch and I met all of her friends. They were super nice. I wasn't exactly looking forward to the next day at school, but I guess I wasn't dreading it as much s I was dreading today.
I raced off the bus (well, as fast as my crutches would let me go) and into the front door.
"Hey, sweetie! How was your first day of school?" Riker asked, coming around the corner to meet me. I shrugged.
"Okay, I guess." Riker looked disappointed with my answer.
"7 hours with no Zanni and all I get is 'okay I guess'? I missed you! Tell me more! Is the teacher as bed as you thought? Did you get punched a lot?" I laughed.
"No, of course not! I met a girl named Eloise and she's super nice and a huge fan of ME, not you guys." Riker nodded. "And I saw Grant." He nodded again. "And then there's this really mean kid, Dylan, who says Elly slept with her friend Jake."
"Is it true?"
"No! But he's mean to her, so we stay away. We don't like him."
"Okay, if he causes you any trouble, let us know."
"Kay." And I walked to the kitchen for snacks.

The next day was school again. I sat up in bed and almost got out when I remembered a revolutionary idea that had changed mankind. The fake fever. Yes! Ross, for some reason, loved those WinterGreen breath mints and had bought some the other day. I read somewhere that they spike your temperature for a few seconds, enough to make you "sick". I tiptoed out of bed and crawled into the kitchen (crutched make too much noise). I glanced around the corner, expecting Riker to be cooking breakfast. But he wasn't. It was working well so far! I went to the pantry and found the pack of the WinterGreen mints. I took a handful and returned to my bed. I closed my eyes for a bit until Riker came in.
"Time for school!"
"I don't feel good. Do I have to go?"
"Do you have a fever?" I shrugged. "I'll get the thermometer. Stay here." I smiled. Working like a charm! I took a mint and put it in my mouth, under my tongue so I could still talk and all that. He read my temperature.
"37.8 degrees. That's pretty high. Yeah, I'll let you stay home." He left my room and I fell back asleep, excited for no school.
I woke up a few hours later and looked at my clock. 9:10 am. Yes! No school! I got out of bed and walked slowly down the hall.
"Hey, Ro. Feel better?" Riker asked. He was sitting on the couch in the living room watching footie with the others.
"A little. But I don't think I need any medicine. I'm getting better on my own."
"Okay." I nodded and sat down in Ross' lap. Soon, everyone was getting up to get ready. Riker had DWTS, Rocky was recording some guitar, Ryland was going to hang out with his friends, Ellington and Rydel were doing who knows what together, and Ross had A&A. Ross waved me over before everyone was about to leave.
"Zanni, I know you don't feel good. I don't want you home alone when you feel that way. I want you to come with me to the shooting. Kay?" I nodded. I had always wanted to go with him, but he always said 'today isn't a good day' or 'maybe tomorrow' or 'I'm getting home late and I don't want you to get home late too'. I always agreed, but I secretly I despised it. What harm would I cause? But anyways, I was excited. I crutched (if that's a word) to my room and got dressed in a pink tutu and a faded floral t shirt with a brown belt. ***Picture Above*** Following in Rydel's footsteps. I had my headband to match and threw on a pair of black high top Chucks (so what if it doesn't match, we're Lynches and Lynches wear Converse). I already had on a pair rainbow striped socks that went to my shins. I was planning on taking them off, but too late now. Of course, I only had one shoe on and one sock on because my plaster, but it looked good anyways. In my mind, at least. I walked back to the living room and said bye to everyone before going to Ross' car and getting shot gun. Yay! Ross got in the drivers seat and we were off.
"I know you're not sick," he told me.
"Really?" He nodded. "Please don't tell. I'll get in a lot of trouble."
"I won't. That was good. What did you use, mints? Or did you mess with the thermometer?"
"I used mints. Pretty savvy, eh?" I asked.
"Yeah! Good acting, too. I won't tell. But why don't you want to go to school? Something happen? Something you want to tell your favourite brother who is always there for you no matter what?"
"Firstly, you haven't been there in about, hmmm... 2 years. And no, nothing happened. I just don't like school. I don't understand half the stuff."
"It'll get better. But I'm still your favourite brother, right?"
"Why are you so obsessed with being my favourite?" I asked laughing. "But sure, if you want. But it's not official. I don't have favourites."
"But if you did, it'd be me, right?" I laughed.
"Sure." The rest of the car ride consisted of chatter of unimportant things. Until...
