Rex was already starting to get used to us after only a few hours. He fell asleep right as everyone was leaving to go do what they were going to do for that day.  Ryland and I were the only ones left. Ryland sat down, ready to play COD.

"Ryland!" I whined. He didn't budge. "Ry!"

"What?! I'm busy!" he scolded, turning his attention back to the TV.

"I'm so bored, can't we do something? You are my big brother, after all."

"Go play with Rex, we didn't get his so you could play with his for an hour and a half before getting bored."

"He's asleep," I said, in a 'duh' tone.

"Fine. I'll show you something I bet you've never seen before."

"In this house?" I asked. Ryland nodded. "10 bucks says I've seen it before."

"You're on!" he yelled, jumping up and running up the stairs. I followed. What could be in our house, where I've lived for a very long time, that I've never seen before?

Ryland stopped in the middle of the hallway.

"What?" I ask, looking around. I'd been in this hallway at least a million times, nothing was abnormal.

"Look!" Ryland told me.

"I am!"

"Look up." I did. The attic door.

"The attic? I've seen that loads of times! Now you have to pay me 10 dollars, block head."

"Hang on. Have you ever been in the attic?" he asked. I shook my head. "Good," he said with a smile. "Look out!" I moved out of the way as he yanked the string that hung from the ceiling. Down came some stairs. Ry pulled them down more and dropped them gently on the floor.

"C'mon!" he told me. He started to climb up, and I followed. I was a bit afraid, I'll admit it. What was up here? What was usually in attics? Storage. Why would he want to show me storage? I shook my head. That wasn't it. Then what could it be?

Ryland stepped up the last rung and waited for me. I followed. As I got onto the floor, I saw a maze of hallways and turns and small rooms.

"Whoa..." I said, getting a good look. Ryland started to walk down a hallway to the right. I walked right behind him. This place gave me the creeps. But Ryland seemed to know it pretty well, which leaves me to ask myself what was so important up here that he had come up here a lot, enough to know his way around? Why was he showing me? We walked for a while longer, going down a turn to the left, left again, and then the right. And there it was.

A gigantic... playroom thing. It wasn't a playroom, more of an indoor outside with bikes and a turf area and a chalkboard wall and a keyboard and swings and a slide.

"Wow!" I said. "Can we go?"

"Yeah! Let's.... have a race! On our old bikes!"

"Okay! I call Ross'," I answered, running towards the bikes. Ross spent a summer working one year just to save up for this really expensive and nice bike. I was so gonna beat Ryland.

We drew a start and finish line on the ground with chalk and climbed onto the bikes.

"Ready!" I yelled.

"Set!" Ryland yelled.

"Go!" we yelled at the same time, setting off. The room was really long, and wide too, but mostly long. I went as fast as I could, but Ryland still beat me. I just wasn't used to Ross' bike.

"Rematch?" I asked. Ryland nodded.

We started again, and Ryland won again. I was determined to beat him at least once.

"Again?" I asked. We went again. I almost won. "One more time?"

"Ugh, fine."

We got back on and took off. My bike started to really speed up. I started to put on the breaks but the didn't work.

"Ryland! I can't stop!" I yelled.

"Why not?" he asked. But I didn't answer. The bike hit something on the floor and sent me flying over the handlebars. I landed on the ground with a thud.

"You alright?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," I said with a smile as I got up. It didn't hurt, therefore it was awesome.

"That was pretty cool, Ro." I nodded, but I was staring at the ground.

"There's blood on the floor, Ry."

Ry jogged over. "Yeah, you sure you're not hurt?"

"I think so," I said, unsure. "No, my hand! Ryland my hand!" I screamed.

"Oh my gosh. What do we do? Do I have to take you to the hospital?" I started crying. You know, it doesn't hurt at first but then it does. Shock, I guess. But it hurt; really, really bad.

Ryland grabbed his phone.

"Hi, Ro got hurt and I don't know what to do!" he said. "Okay, bye." He hung up and dialed another number. "Mom?" Someone answered. "Yeah, Rosannah got hurt, the brakes on Ross' bike stopped working and flipped her and she was fine but then there was blood and then her hand started to hurt and now there is a big cut in her hand and I don't know what to do. Riker is coming home soon." They answered again. "Okay, bye Mom. Love you too." Ryland turned his attention towards me. I slowed my crying because now it was sort of under control. "Mom says there are plasters and bandages in the cabinet downstairs, come on."

He picked me up and carried me downstairs, setting me on the counter in the kitchen. My jeans were all bloody, as was my shirt and shoes and skin and everything. There was a lot of blood. It was disgusting. Ryland came back a few minutes later with a pack of bandages and plasters.

"Kay. I have no clue how to do this. Mom explained it to me, but I'm not the most Mom-ish type so sorry if it hurts. I'm just doing what's necessary." I nodded. I washed off my hand to the best of my ability (it hurt really badly) and Ryland wrapped a bandage around it (very poorly, too tight then too loose and then it fell off and we had to start over).

"There! Beautiful!" Ryland said. I looked down. I had a paw, a bloody, lumpy, paw. Great. And it hurt worse than it did before.

"Ryland, it really hurts. Can't we call Riker?"

"Riker will be home in an hour and Mom and Dad are flying in tonight. Deal for an hour, okay? Please?"

"Okay."

"Cool. Let's watch a film to get your mind off of it." I nodded. "What do you want to watch?"

I shrugged. "You pick."

"The Exorcist or The Shining?" Ryland asked. I groaned.

"Really Ry?"

"Yeah! I love those films! You will learn to love them, too. Just watch them."

"Fine!" I agreed. "But I'll probably sleep with you tonight, and you aren't allowed to say no."

"Baby!" he sneered.

"Stop." And we sat down in the living room with my paw to watch The Shining. Great. We started on opposite sides of the couch but by the middle of the movie, I was about as close to Ry as I could be. He was laughing.

"Rex!" I whisper-yelled. "Rex! Come here!" he bolted up and ran over to me, jumping on my lap. I pet him for the next few minutes. And someone came through the door... it was too early for Riker to come home. Who was in our house?
