As Kailee rode the bus home, she shuddered.
The hunger was gnawing at her gut and she was starving.
She promised she would feed tonight.

It was 11:00 PM when Kailee woke Demon up. "Come on, boy. You and I both know that we need to feed. It's been weeks."
Demon stared at her for a few seconds before sending her a lopsided, dog-like smile and got up.
They both snuck down the stairs, careful not to wake anyone in the quiet house.
When Kailee and Demon made it to the kitchen, they froze when a voice spoke. "Aren't you supposed to be in bed and not sneaking out?"
Kailee and Demon turned around to see Miss Mona standing there in her pajamas.
Kailee's eyes widened before flickering black. She had put off feeding for weeks, and even though she promised she'd feed, she had waited until tonight. She was right at her limit.
She could feel Demon's hunger because of their emotional link. He was struggling to stay under control too.
Both of them were.
"Miss Mona!" Kailee managed to gasp out through the unbearable struggle.
"What's wrong? Why are you trying to leave?" She asked. She noticed both dog and girl were shaking. "Are you okay?"
"Go back to bed, Miss Mona. Demon and I will be here in the morning. Just go back to bed. Please." Kailee begged.
"Kailee... I'm not going to leave until you tell me what you were trying to do." Miss Mona insisted.
"I'm so hungry." Kailee whimpered.
"You just ate two hours ago, hon." Miss Mona said, confused.
"So hungry. Two weeks. Two weeks I've held off feeding. I haven't eaten in two weeks." Kailee gasped.
"I've seen you eat, Kailee. Maybe you need to sit down." Miss Mona made a move to help Kailee, but Demon pounced in front of her, snarling.
Demon's eyes flickered green, and green smoke flared through his nose.
Miss Mona's eyes widened slightly and she took another step back as she held up her hands.
"I wasn't going to hurt her, Demon." Miss Mona promised.
"Go back to bed. Before I kill you like all the others. Go back to bed." Kailee pleaded. The only reason Kailee hadn't run away yet was because she was so hungry and there was food right in front of her. She couldn't possibly skip the opportunity for an easy meal, although she tried.
"Kailee, are you saying you killed all of your other families?" Miss Mona asked calmly.
"I didn't mean to. I was so hungry. I'm sorry. Go back to bed. Just go back to bed." Kailee cried.
Demon twitched again in hunger as his fur and skin shed, dissolving. The blood poured off of his bones and dissolved too, as it hit the hard floor. His multicolored eyes glowed radioactive green with no pupils or whites and his bones glowed the same radioactive green, the edges of his body blurring.
Kailee shuddered and let her human form go willingly. The ends of her brown hair turned to blue flames. Her eyes changed from grey to a pitch black and all of her teeth turned to fangs.
Her head swung back and forth as the flames trailed along behind her hair. Demon's tail swung behind him, lashing.
Miss Mona stared, but didn't scream.
"I'm so hungry!" Kailee cried, but it came out echo-like.
"You didn't mean to kill those people. Demons or not, you don't have to do this." Miss Mona said.
Kailee and Demon snapped back to reality, but didn't change back to their normal forms.
"I'm so sorry." Kailee whispered and turned around, ripping open the door and running, Demon straight behind her.
Miss Mona may have stopped them from eating her and the rest of the kids, but not the others.
Kailee and Demon still needed to feed.

At one in the morning, the kitchen door opened and Kailee and Demon snuck inside, in their normal forms.
Miss Mona sat at the table. "Mind explaining?"
Kailee and Demon glanced at each other. Kailee turned back to Miss Mona. "Fine."

"My father was a demon and my mother was a human. He raped her and when my mom gave birth to me, she abandoned me in a ditch. Adopting services found me and I was adopted a lot of times. Even being half human, my demon side needed food. Needed souls. I was young so I didn't understand it. I killed all of my families in the first one to two weeks I was there. At the age of five, right before my birthday, I killed my last set of parents. I ran away on my birthday. While on my own, I found Demon. I found out he was a half demon dog and we formed a connection. I could feel his emotions and he could feel mine. We couldn't talk to each other, not yet at least, but it was something. We've been on the run for six years, and now we're here. I'm surprised. Most people scream and run or try to shoot Demon and I." Kailee explained.
"You were Kailee, demon or not, I knew that. You wouldn't have hurt me." She said.
"Don't be so sure." Kailee whispered.
Miss Mona shrugged. "Doesn't matter to me. Can you change to your demon forms at will or only when...hungry?"
"At will. But it force-changes us when hungry." Kailee said.
"Could you do it now?" Miss Mona asked.
Kailee looked at Demon, and he nodded. Kailee got out of the chair and changed. Demon followed.
Miss Mona stared at the two demons. They looked terrifying. She had to admit, if she'd never met Kailee, she would have ran screaming.
But it was still Kailee. Still Demon.
They were dangerous, sure. But not evil.
She smiled. "Go back to bed. You still have school tomorrow."
Kailee stared at her in shock, before groaning and trudging up to her room, Demon in tow, both still in demon form.
Miss Mona looked at the table. "I should go to bed too."

At school the next day, Tray appeared beside her and smiled. "You look happier today. Why?"
Kailee smiled mysteriously. "Someone I know convinced me that maybe, just maybe, I may not be the monster I thought I was."
