Tray stood there, trying to comprehend what Kailee was saying.
She was a demon, her dog was a demon. There was proof right in front of him.
They fed on souls. They killed.
But not by choice.
Could Tray really turn his back on them? Her? Just because they were something neither had any control over?
He'd promised himself that he'd stick by her and keep her secrets to the end.
Could he really break that promise just because her secret was more than he expected?
No, he couldn't. He couldn't do that to himself. He couldn't do that to Demon.
He couldn't do that to Kailee.
No matter how much she begged him to leave and ignore her. No matter how much she tried to push him away, she didn't want to be alone. She wanted a friend. She was just trying to protect him.
Her whole life, she'd just been trying to protect everybody. Wasn't it her turn to be protected?
"You're not going to have my blood on your hands, Kay." He told her.
Kailee looked at him with her pitch black eyes. They were like Demon's. No pupils or whites.
"Why not?" She asked him, her voice cracking.
"Whether or not you know it, you have control. Hungry or not, you have control, and I don't doubt that. You're Kailee, okay! You're the same Kailee! I just know a bit more about you than I did before. Your demon side, it's a part of you, whether you like it or not. It makes you, you. I wouldn't have it any other way. So quit being so self conscious, and hug me." Tray rambled.
Kailee, still in demon form, hugged him and cried into his shoulder, getting blood all over his shirt.
"Why are you being so nice to me? Even after I showed you the monster I really am?" Kailee asked quietly.
"You're not a monster. You're a demon. In my point of view, monsters and demons are completely different things. Plus, you're my friend. Why wouldn't I be nice to you?" Tray replied.
She pulled away and smiled at him, blood still on her cheeks, her rows of sharp, shark-like teeth glinting in the light.
She blinked her pitch black eyes, when Tray spoke. "Why didn't your hair burn me?"
"Simple. I didn't want it to." She replied.
Kailee turned back to her human form and Demon turned back to his normal form.
The blood was still on her cheeks, but she wiped it away and rinsed off her hands.
She glanced at Tray's shirt. "I got blood on your shirt."
Tray shrugged. "I don't mind."
"Maybe not, but what about your mom?" Kailee raised an eyebrow.
"That's gonna be a hard one to explain." Tray realized. "It's not like I can say my demon best friend cries blood and got it all over my shoulder."
"Well," Kailee shrugged. "You could."
Tray laughed and shoved her shoulder. "You know I can't, stupid."
"Just a suggestion." Kailee huffed, but was smiling, nonetheless.
Demon wagged his tail and barked.
"Oh, you want some attention too, boy?" Kailee teased. Demon barked and nodded.
Kailee laughed. "Well, come here!" She laughed.
