Chapter Four:
The next evening, an hour before Thea and Loki leave for Asgard, plans change slightly. Thea and Loki are still going to Asgard, but Videl is leaving with them, to go back to Ardhigiza.
Considering Videl is the rightful emperor of Ardhigiza, he hasn't been frequenting the realm lately. Thea guesses this is because the Velah elders have become even more cranky with Videl, and she also guesses this is because they're conspiring to take the throne from him. But seeing as Videl has been acting completely sane for almost two years and Victoire is a little too young to be interest, Thea is pretty sure the elders are running out of options. And with the support of Amara and Jijah's parents, two influential Velah leaders, Thea thinks Videl has the throne in a bag.
"You should banish them for all eternity," suggests Thea as she, Videl, and Loki walk behind Tony and Bruce toward the portal. It had taken a while. Videl had had to pry himself off Victoire, who he is leaving in Emmaline's care.
"Or," says Videl, "I could offer them mercy and win the hearts of my subjects instead."
Tony throws in his own suggestion. "You could decapitate them as traitors to the emperor."
"And that would turn me into Joffrey Baratheon," retorts Videl, who, along with Thea and Jack, have gotten hooked on Game of Thrones but unlike Thea and Jack, won't admit it outright. "So I'd rather not be poisoned on the day of my wedding."
"What a shame," says Thea. "Think how disappointed Angelique would be."
While Tony and Bruce begin fiddling with the portal, Jack turns to Thea. He takes her hand and rubs his thumbs over her knuckles. "Please be careful," he says. His hazel eyes are wide and anxious. "You're torturing me here, leaving for a month without being able to talk to me."
"I'm sorry," says Thea truthfully.
"Why'd you have to burn that journal?" Jack pouts.
"Because Loki was being an ass at the time," supplies Videl.
Loki jerks his head up and glares at Videl, who doesn't look any more affected than if Thea had been glaring at him too.
"Get out," says Thea, punching Videl in the shoulder.
"Actually, you and Loki are going first," says Tony. "Give my regards to the Asgardians. And if you happen to see Neidra while you're there, give her hell for us."
"Literally," says Jack, squeezing Thea's fingers and leaning forward to kiss her lightly on the lips.
*
Asgard has changed since Thea had last visited. For one thing, the instant she arrives at the Bifrost, she is addressed as "princess" or "crowned princess". Even though Videl and Peter had teased her with the title for a while, actually hearing it on the Asgardians' tongues seems strange to her.
But aside from this, she's delighted to be back. After such a long absence, the beauty of Asgard seems even more stunning, and after Loki drops her off to her room to go meet with several guards and officials, she walks out onto the balcony and looks out at the jaw-dropping view of the villages below and the sparkling sea to the east.
