Chapter 36:
Thea watches as her father stares at the flame-haired sorceress in front of him. She has never seen his face so blank, so empty. She realizes for the first time that Loki had truly accepted in his heart that Eala had been dead. The soldiers before Eala's army are completely silent, and Thea can only hear the whickering of horses and clanking of metal.
A nimble figure jumps from a gray mare. Tossing her bushy red hair from her rosy cheeks, Marjoy ambles to Loki. Grinning up at him, she says, "Smile, handsome. It'd do better than yer staring."
Finally wrenching his eyes from Eala, Loki glares at the younger Dmitri sibling. "You knew I was looking for you. Why didn't you show yourself?"
"Because yer stupid," says Marjoy.
Thea has to force herself to keep a straight face.
Loki's glare deepens. "Do explain."
"If I'd told ya there was an army comin' for ye, what'd you do? Ye would have expected us, prepared for us, and beyond that, yer spies certainly would have."
"Any spies in my army are dead," says Loki stiffly.
"Really? Ye have complete trust in every single man and woman in yer army?" Marjoy crosses her arms and leans against Loki's shoulder, flicking her curls in his face. While he scowls, she says, "See, this is why yer stupid."
"It was a means of protection for us and you," says Eala. Her voice is smooth and clear, with less of the rolling accent as than her younger sister. She walks to Loki, her steps graceful. "Even if Neidra knows I am here by now- which she surely does- there is very little she can do now. Our armies are at least close to even."
Loki still seems to be having a hard time processing the two women in front of him. This seems to delight Marjoy further. "Ye really didn't know? Yer daughter's a better liar than I thought, then."
Loki whirls on Thea, who goes rigid and mentally vows to get back at Marjoy for this.
"You knew?" Loki asks in a dangerous whisper.
Thea smiles nervously. "Sorry..."
"Don't get yer feathers ruffled at her," says Marjoy. "I told her to keep this silent. She has more sense than ye at any rate. She knows when to keep things quiet."
"Marjoy," says Eala. "Let Loki alone for once in your life."
The younger Dmitri sister rolls her eyes. "Where's yer folly? I can't poke fun at this column of stone often. I take my opportunities when I can."
"Loki," says Eala, reaching forward and wrapping her fingers around Loki's arm. Thea sees her father close his eyes briefly at her touch. "Do not be upset. I did this only to protect us, and to protect you. It would do us little good if Neidra expected me to join you, and promptly tried to annihilate your waiting army."
Taking a deep breath, Loki puts his hand to his forehead. "Is Lak safe?"
"Yes," says Eala gently. "My brother is at the rear of the formation with Dai. He will be here in moments."
