Chapter 49:
The rain that was roaring through the canyon of Fletohein begins to lessen in its intensity, but Thea's sword and steel do not.
The river has split the fighting into two main, chaos-infected sections. On the western side, Eala's archers still bore out their arrows, but the close-range of their own fighters has prompted most to put down their bows and start the descent downward. Most of Eala's footsoldiers are on this half, battling side-by-side with Enekpe's mounted cavalry and golden armor. Loki and Peter are the only two from the Avengers, though as Peter swings from the rocky pillars, he begins to worry where Angelique went. The remains of Fjodr's and Olwu's armies, many of which have been cut down by arrows, fight them against the rocks. Seeing their numbers being depleted, many of Neidra's soldiers are crossing the river to try to help.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Thea fights fiercely with Natasha, Clint, and Kyle surrounding her. Jack is nearby, scaling the rocky wall below Marjoy's archers, who have followed the west's lead and are beginning to descend into the main chaos of the battle. Nearby, Videl uses his spear to impale more than a few of the soldiers once belonging to Ralphy, and some of Neidra's strays. Thea has yet to glimpse Neidra or Caomh again, and as she grits her teeth through the rain, she wonders if they have run off.
But she knows they haven't. She knows that they are preferring to watch the death, waiting to kill as they watch the commercials.
Swarms of black mist appear on each side of the river bank as Videl's Velah army plants surprise attacks on the unsuspecting dark soldiers. As she swings Kiahriah, Thea notices that most of them are targeting the dark swords Neidra had turned to her magic, and it's a logical move: those black swords are hard to put down, even with Kiahriah or magic, and to use their black mist to knock the blades away from their unsuspecting wielders is very intelligent of the Velah.
Someone jumps from a rock to land just behind her, and Thea whirls the emerald dagger around, ready to kill.
"Relax, it's just me," says Marjoy, notching an arrow and sending it into the heart of a charging man.
Thea rolls her eyes, dodging a blow from a cudgel. "No more canyon fighting?"
"Nah, not unless ye want the risk o' me hitting ye instead," the red-haired archer responds.
"Thank you for your consideration," says Thea, killing the man with a cudgel and running to help Kyle take down two more of Neidra's soldiers. One of them is carrying a black Asgardian sword, and Thea hears the whistle as it streaks toward her neck. Just in time, she leaps, rolling on the ground while avoiding Kiahriah's blade.
"You good, Thea?" shouts Kyle, shooting two soldiers in two seconds. Their bodies slump, one of them slipping into the river to float forever.
"Just a second," mutters Thea, jumping on a rock to give herself even height with the sword-wielding man. His eyes are dark brown, and he is at least twice her size. She sets her jaw as she juts Kiahriah forward, but the man dodges the blow and instead swings his black sword at her. Thea, likewise dodging, loses her footing on the uneven rock and falls, tumbling to the wet ground.
The man's black sword is high in the air, and Thea is just about to send flames at him when he is shot in the breast, and an arrow notches itself in his eyes.
As the man topples dead, Thea glares through the rain at both Kyle and Marjoy. "I was about to kill him!"
"Were you?" asks Kyle, neatly side-stepping one of Neidra's soldiers and then shooting it. He reloads his gun, shooting Thea a half-moon grin. "I couldn't tell."
