JUNE 19 2010

Seagulls soar over the crashing waves of Sea Island, Georgia, cawing at each other and diving into the rollicking ocean to pick fish from the water and carry them away. There is not a cloud in the azure sky, and the setting sun brightly beats down on the sand. Children run around the beach, screaming in delight when the waves catch their toes or when they find yet another beautiful shell.

But there is one child not screaming in delight. She is hardly making a sound at all, sitting up on the balcony of the Cloister, a high-end hotel on the beach, alone.

She is watching three figures on the sand, two tall, one small. The tallest is a man in swimming trunks. He has tan skin, black hair, just the amount of scruff to make him incredibly handsome, and chiseled features on his striking face. The woman smiling beside him has an hourglass body and is wearing a white swimsuit that shows it off. She adjusts her sunglasses and gazes down at the last figure, a six year old girl who is playing with her father's hand and squealing in joy when he swings her above the sand.

Thea refuses to cry. Ever since Erik Fossil had come back two years ago, when she was eight years old, she'd wanted him gone. But Annabelle seems to be endlessly in love with him again and won't hear of it. But every moment Erik has been in the apartment is a moment that Thea wants to run away and leave forever.

At first, she had been overjoyed when Erik had returned. She'd thought her father would be delighted to see her too, and that he could finally explain his absence. But all he had done was look at her like "Why are you still here?" and gone into the other room to kiss Leah and greet her with the most loving tenderness. His voice now sets off a chain reaction in her, one that sends her running into the other room just to avoid crying that he doesn't love her. And heaven help her if she upsets Leah when Erik is in the room.

Thea keeps watching her family. She wants to go back inside the breezy room, but she'd been ordered to stay put on the balcony so Annabelle and Erik could look up and see her. But Thea hasn't seen them look up once.

When Leah bends down and picks up a shell and shows it to her father and when Erik beams and picks her up and swirls her around like she'd just found a pearl, Thea grits her teeth harder. But she can't stop the tiny tear from trickling down her cheek and splashing onto the wooden post of the balcony.

Thirty minutes later, the figures leave the beach as the sun sets completely. Thea crosses her arms and leans against the chair, staring at the rising moon and wishing it would take her away into the stars.

The door opens, and a soaking wet Erik, Annabelle, and Leah walk into the room, all laughing or smiling. Watching from the balcony, Thea feels something growing inside her chest, something prickled. She takes a deep breath to make herself not want to either start screaming or stop crying. She feels her stomach grumble. She hasn't eaten since noon.
