Chapter 28
I feel the adrenaline running through me as Fandral and I hurry across the decks of the Dyirna, shouting orders at the sailors. Jack chooses this time to emerge from his cabin. He looks a little woozy, but at least he's not throwing up. With him is Videl. Both of them are frowning, looking very concerned.
"Is Line all right?" asks Jack. "She was crying and–"
"She went into labor," I say.
"And not to alarm you further," says Fandral, "but we're sailing into a storm."
From above, hanging at the crow's nest, Rajan's gravelly voice booms, "Princess, red sails are on our tail!"
I curse and then fly up the ladder, swinging up onto the crow's nest. I take the telescope from Rajan, ignoring the darkening clouds and the start of the rain and training the device behind us. My heart sinks as I see a powerful-looking ship with red sails barreling toward us. I don't need to ask to know whose ship that is.
"Keep an eye on them and let me know as soon as you can identify who is on that ship," I say, handing the telescope back to Rajan. As I climb down the crow's nest, I shout, "Secure every loose bit of gear and supply on the deck! Get the cannons ready, because we're going to need them, and prepare to fight!"
"Who's after us?" demands Videl, the rain pelting through his messy hair.
"The devil," I reply. "Where's your spear? And Jack, where's your sword?"
Videl nods to his waist while Jack says, "I've got it with me."
"Videl, stay in the masts. You can see through this rain better than anyone else. Jack, you stay with Fandral on the decks. Get the men and women ready to fight. I'm going to get my sword and knives."
Without waiting for a response, I turn and run, down toward the cabins. As soon as I descend away from the chaotic deck, loud cries of pain reach my ears. I wince.
Water trails from the decks after me as I splash through the hallway toward my cabin. Wrenching the door open, I open the cabinet near the closed porthole and grab my slender silver sword and two throwing knives. I also grab the glove Natasha had rigged up for me, the one with stiletto knives concealed until shot out. Once I fasten the weapons, I pull my already-wet hair in a thick ponytail so it stays out of my eyes. As I push away the damp tendrils, a scream echoes through the cabin hall.
Triple-checking the fastenings of the sword, I run out of my cabin and into the Calen's. Emmaline is on the bed, sweat pouring down her face, the sheets crumbled around her body. Beside her, Kyle's face is taut with fear as he holds his wife's hand, and Loki is speaking to her in a low, soothing voice.
"Loki," I exclaim, "Neidra's behind us."
He whirls to face me, and I can see the worry in his eyes. He opens his mouth to say something, but a broken cry from Emmaline interrupts him.
Grimacing, he stands and crosses the room to me. Taking me by the shoulders, he says firmly, "I have no choice but to stay with Emmaline. I'm relying on you, Theodora, I'm relying on you to lead this ship and to lead those men and women."
