Chapter 23: Monsters into Men
In the second week of April, they go to Asgard.
Loki has employed the help of Fandral, Sif, and Volstagg to transport everyone from Earth to Asgard. In order to attract as less attention as possible, he and Thea have figured to travel to Fletohein in divisions. Loki will be taking Thea, Jack, Peter, and Angelique first, and will also be leading his army of Asgardian soldiers, numbering about six hundred. Following a day behind will be Fandral, accompanied by half of the village fighters, numbering about two hundred, plus Emmaline, Victoire, and Kyle. A day after them will come Volstagg, with the two hundred other villagers, Natasha, Clint, and Tony. Lastly, Loki has given Sif the challenging task of escorting the roughly two hundred Velah from Stark Tower, including Videl and bringing Bruce along for any medical assistance.
Of the five travelers in her group, only Thea, Angelique, Loki have seen anything of Asgard beyond Neidra's mansion, and Angelique saw only a small portion otherwise. As it is, while Loki walks to the armory with his generals to see to the preparations for the march, Thea shows Jack, Peter, and Angelique around the palace, Klaka by her side. Although all are clearly enamored, none talk much: mourning is still in the air.
Getting them in Asgardian armor is a challenge. Loki had left Myra and Likfand, a husband and wife pair, in charge of trying to outfit the three. When Thea comes back from changing into her own armor, she finds Peter and Jack struggling to figure out where the leather straps go around their shoulders. In the meanwhile, Angelique, dressed in red and silver, seems to be having a manageable time, and when she walks out from the changing shield, she looks as beautiful as always.
"Videl might faint when he sees you," says Thea. "Fair warning."
"I've already virtually fainted many a time from seeing you," offers Jack, inspecting a short sword Thea recognizes from her training with Loki as a falchion. "So how do I use one of these bloody things?"
"We're not going to be going against Neidra for a while," says Thea. "I don't think either side is ready to fight. So Loki and I are going to be training you all."
"That should be interesting," says Peter.
"What's wrong with my pistols?" demands Jack. "They're perfectly nice pistols. And I'm a bloody good aim."
"I'm sure you are," says Thea. "But you won't have time to reload and aim when you're surrounded by five Asgardian armored soldiers coming at you with spears and swords and shields."
As the sun reaches its peak in the sky, Thea leads her friends down to the stables, which are a chaotic scramble for the departure: Jack nearly gets trampled twice, Angelique is hit on by a stable boy, and Peter makes friends with a goat. Miraculously, Thea manages to push them to the back courtyard, where their horses are waiting. Stjarna has already been saddled and is trying to nip away Banamadr.
While Thea pulls her mare away from the persistent stallion, she points out the three palfreys tied nearby. "These are yours. I'm pretty sure you have the gray one, Jack, because it's the tallest."
