Chapter 38

"We're dead," whispers Jack as he and Thea creep through the underbrush. It's pitch black, and Thea only has the flames on her fingers to guide him. "Assuming Neidra doesn't kill us, Loki definitely will."

"You volunteered to come with me," she reminds him. They've already snuck past the guards, courtesy of the massively successful distraction consisting of Marjoy knocking Videl into the river and the subsequent brawl that ensued. Loki hadn't even been around- Thea hadn't seen him since early evening, and she has a sneaking suspicion as to what he's doing. Regardless, it hadn't been terribly difficult to edge away from the camp. Thea changed into her light armor and found Loki's black cloak in the food room. It drags behind her like a train, but it's warm and hides her face.

"I do that all the time," says Jack. "I volunteered to help you in the rainforest. And look what ended up happening: we got caught." He pauses. "Not that I think we're going to be caught. We're bloody professionals now."

"Bloody professionals keep their mouths shut when they're trying to sneak into the enemy's camp," says Thea.

She can't see him, but she imagines he rolls his eyes. Instead of talking, he leans around her and kisses her. Despite the thrill she feels in her veins, she pokes his dimple. "Shush. We are on a very important mission."

"Ah yes," he whispers. "That mission. The one in which we may or may not die either at the hands of a sorceress or a sorcerer, take your pick."

"Loki won't kill us," she says. They have reached the edge of the forest, and the darkness of the night is extended tenfold inside the masses of leaves and bushes and trees. The boughs and limbs are twisted, dangling over the path like skinny, sharp guards. "We really do need to stay quiet now. From what the scouts know, Neidra's camp is shaped like a U, but her tent is in the center. Guards her the most. But we're not going to her tent, because that would be like going to the Death Star."

"I still can't believe you haven't watched Star Wars."

"I've been busy. But we'll go around. Stay quiet."

He gives her a thumbs-up. "Although," he whispers, "it'd be nice if we had that invisibility cloak, just for old time's sake."

Thea takes out her emerald dagger from its leather satchel tied tightly around her waist. Pulling her cloak over her head, she hides her face and sneaks toward the glowing of campfires. As she and Jack walk forward quietly, she bites her lip to keep herself focused on the task at hand. She has confidence in hers and Jack's abilities, but still wishes they weren't alone.

But there hadn't been anyone they could have possibly considered to take with them. Angelique is always with Kyle and Emmaline in the evenings, and to remove her would be to draw extreme suspicion. Videl is expected at the Velah camp in the southern ridge of Fletohein, and as the ruler, couldn't come away- besides, Thea had little doubt Neidra's wards would allow for him to Jaunt them in and out of the perimeter. Peter had almost come, but then Saldra had appointed him to a night guard shift on the edge of the cliffs, using his acute vision to see for miles.

And as for Marjoy, since the afternoon, Lak had watched his little sister like a hawk. It'd be the easiest task in the world for Marjoy to sneak away from camp, but her absence would immediately alert Lak. Lak is the most practical of the Dmitri siblings ("which translates to the most boring and the tattle tale", observed Videl), and Marjoy told Thea that he would go to Loki the instant he realized his sister was missing.
