Chapter 50:
When Thea's eyes blearily open, she sits up with a start, ignoring the sharp pain in her head where she struck the rocky wall.
Stumbling, she gets to her feet, sheathing Kiahriah. The cave is eerily silent, with only the distant shouts to remind her of the war raging outside. In her soft bed, Victoire's small chest rises and falls as she breathes faintly, the pendant glowing bright on her neck.
Thea's weary eyes fall on Angelique, as still and pale as a marble angel. Her eyes are closed now, and despite the blood, there is a sort of calm tranquility in the girl that wrenches Thea's heart even more.
Videl is gone. Thea knows he didn't mean to knock her out, but at the moment, it hardly matters. What matters is that he has gone after Caomh, and Caomh could very well be leading the hotheaded Velah into a trap of death.
Looking once more at Victoire and Angelique, two girls who mean everything to Videl, Thea clenches the golden hilt of Kiahriah and runs out of the cave.
When she emerges, the first thing she sees is the chaos, the untold chaos of war. Long before now has Thea realized war is no fairytale, it is no game of chivalry and nobility. War is raw and exposes the very worst of man as it tears humanity apart. Now, as she takes in the dead bodies and the rallying cries of those who have survived as of yet, Thea swallows, then grits her teeth.
She needs to find Videl.
Thea runs straight into the melee, her leather boots drumming against the river rocks. The rain has slowed more, giving her a clear path ahead, but even this cannot point her to where Videl could possibly be. She has no means of tracking him, no Velah intuition or hunting skills to show her the way.
A flurry of feathers lands beside her, and then Jack folds his long, brown wings behind him. There is a small trickle of blood on his temple, and his left sleeve has been ripped, but beyond that, he seems all right, and most importantly, he is alive.
His brow, already shaded by fighting, furrows in worry. Thea feels the tears on her cheeks from weeping.
Jack's eyes are a question.
Shaking her head, Thea whispers, "Angelique."
His hazel eyes widen, and despite the fighting around them, Jack wraps his arms around Thea, his wings unfolding again to surround her in a cocoon of walnut feathers. When he pulls back, Thea sees that his cheeks are as wet as hers.
Neither can speak. Their foreheads pressed together, they clench the others' fingers tightly. Nothing can betray the fear and the caring they have for each other. The war rages around them, but something like an invisible force surrounds Thea and Jack, a force protected by Jack's long wings.
Taking a deep breath, Thea finally pulls away. "I have to find Videl," she whispers.
Jack is about to answer, but then suddenly, he notches an arrow and lets it fly. Ignoring the shout of the targeted man, he touches her face. "Go. I'll always be waiting for you."
She knows what he is talking about. The years that will soon stretch between them, breaking them apart until one will leave the other forever. For it is here in Asgard where Thea truly belongs. It is where she has always belonged.
"Kiss me," Thea says, pressing her lips together to contain her emotions. "One more time."
He does, and the battle melts away again as Jack's wings unfold and wrap around them, as Thea and Jack kiss so passionately, they stumble on the wet rocks. His arms go around her, his hands moving up and down her body, and as Thea's arms wrap around his neck, she breathes in the scent of familiarity and first love.
