Chapter 20:

It takes Thea a while to figure out what to do about Marjoy.

She'd half-hoped that Loki would be shrewd enough to guess something was going on when she returned to him and Fandral and Sif at the outdoor eatery. Unfortunately, either she is getting more adept at hiding things from him, he simply isn't spending as much time analyzing her every move, or a combination of both.

As it is, as Thea lies awake in Ryek's inn that night and stares up at the ceiling. Beside her, Loki is already asleep, his shoulders rising and falling. His breathing is long and heavy, and he hasn't moved an inch from when he'd crashed onto the mattress. Not even Thea shifting constantly wakes him.

Finally, she drifs away after giving up and deciding to keep Marjoy's secret. If she's one of Loki's childhood companions like he'd said and she'd said, then there truly isn't much to be worried for about her. What Thea feels most guilt about is keeping secret the news that Eala is alive. She knows for sure that if she thought Jack were dead, and Loki knew full well he wasn't dead and furthermore didn't tell her at once, she'd be furious. But if what Marjoy says is true, that if Loki takes action not knowing Eala's location or her current status he'll be ruined, then she has to protect him. And Loki is known to be rash ...

She just hopes that Eala stays alive, and that when Loki finds out at some point in the distant future, he'll be too relieved to kill his daughter.

By the time Loki shakes her awake the next morning at dawn, Thea has gotten very little sleep. It takes her father several minutes to rouse her, and when she finally opens her eyes and groans, he says, "How much sleep did you get, kitten?"

"Less than I'd like," she grumbles.

"Unfortunately for you, the ride to Horha is a few hours. You'll need to stay awake at least to guide Stjarna along the path. Fandral and Sif are accompanying us this time."

"Yay," she says, still half-asleep.

"And I recommend you get dressed before you walk out of the room into the streets of Ryek."

She looks down. She's still in the torn shorts and cotton shirt she'd worn to bed. "Oh. Damn it."

"What have I done to merit such harsh language for so early in the morning?" he asks mildly, throwing the tusseled pillows and blankets back in position on the large overstuffed mattress.

Thea doesn't reply, and zombie-walks into the tiny washroom to change and splash water on her face. By the time she emerges back into the bedroom into her armor, Loki has changed into his impressive collection of green and silver leather and metal. He's now sheathing his rapier and silver long knife to his belt.

"Why couldn't you sleep last night?"

"I don't know," she says with a shrug. "I guess I just suffer from incurable royal insomnia."

He shakes his head. "As long as you don't fall off Stjarna. Do you realize how much effort it would be to turn around Banamadr and be forced to sling you across the saddle like a sac?"

She ignores his teasing. "What's for breakfast?"

"Can you stay awake long enough to not choke?" When the pillow smacks him on the jaw, he raises an eyebrow. "I just made the bed."
