Chapter 7:

By the time Videl leaves, it's almost noon. Thea lets him leave immediately and tends to Stjarna and Bravka alone, not letting the stable boy help her. Grooming through the tangled knots in the horses' manes and tails is therapeutic to her, and lets her calm down from everything that has recently happened.

There's no sign of Loki. Thea begins to worry, and spends the rest of the afternoon working off that worry in the training fields. She finds Fandral, and persuades him to practice dueling and combat with her. While Klaka watches with intense green eyes from the sidelines, Thea goes at Fandral again and again– and wins again and again. By the time Fandral is called away by a lieutenant just as the sun begins to set, he has been beaten so many times, it's lucky of Thea he has such a cheerful personality.

"Cheerful personality" can't really be applied to Thea anymore. She eats dinner with Aura and Gilsa, but she lets them talk, answering questions only methodically and not paying attention so intently, Aura sometimes has to repeat her questions.

Finally, Thea escapes the mother and daughter. She hurries to Loki's room and lugs open the golden door. The sun has set, bringing in a chill from the open balcony, but the room is empty. Thea's shoulders fall.

Reluctantly, she walks back to her room, Klaka following right behind. She takes a bath, letting the warm water seep into her fighting-weary muscles. She's not in the mood to wear an Asgardian nightgown, so she just pulls on Kyle's Michigan t-shirt and cotton shorts she'd brought in her overnight duffel. She looks completely out of place in the royally decorated room, but she doesn't care.

Thea walks out onto the balcony. The stars are bright tonight, but the air is cold and Thea shivers, wishing the shirt were long-sleeved.

She settles onto the bench and leans on the rail. The edge of the balcony gives her a view of the paths snaking out from the stables towards either the forests like she'd and Videl had gone earlier, or to the villages like Loki had visited. Bright lanterns hang along the paths.

Klaka joins her at the rail at one point. Her lids grow heavy and she rests her head on her arms. But she refuses to close her eyes- her worry ensures that. It gets colder, but her limbs are too weary and sore from the continuous fighting to warrant her getting up to get something to cover herself. She refuses to go to bed either, even when Klaka nuzzles her with his wet nose and urges her to do so.

Finally, an hour past midnight according to Max's triathlon watch, Thea sees the glowing of lanterns coming up the path from the closest village. She heaves a sigh of relief when she is able to make out the figure of Loki riding the powerful Banamadr up to the palace, Volstagg and Sif close behind. He's wearing a hood, so Thea can't see his face clearly.

She lugs herself away from the balcony, splashes some water on her face from the ausa, then stumbles out of her room with Klaka at her heels.

Even though she's tired, it doesn't take her long to make it to the stables. She finds Loki rubbing down Banamadr, a job he allows only himself to do. His hood is on his shoulders now, and Thea notes his furrowed brow and darkened eyes. Noticing her, he turns toward her still holding the saddle he'd just removed from his black stallion.
