Chapter 46: Three Days Until Death
Not surprisingly, Thea sleeps terribly that night, tossing and turning as the sun takes the place of the moon. Beside her, Loki does his best to soothe her, but she just rolls over and buries her head in her arms.
Across the tent, near the entrance flap, Videl scoffs at Loki's attempts. He hasn't even bothered to try to sleep, but watches Thea struggle through narrowed amber eyes. Occasionally, he bares his fangs, looking into the moonlight and watching the river flow through the canyon, listening to the wind and Thea's quiet whimpers.
"You know why I couldn't let you kill him," says Loki. He has given up trying to talk to Thea- she is in a restless stupor, not sleeping, but at least not wide awake.
"Why?" asks Videl dryly, glaring over his shoulder at the demigod. "Because you thought I would die if I try?"
"No," says Loki. "It's because I knew you would die if you tried."
"Then I should have died!" Videl practically shouts, not caring if he wakes Thea. Hot fury runs through his veins. "I should have died trying to protect her from that leech from that screwed up-"
"If you had died, then what about Thea?" demands Loki. "You would have died trying to save her. When you lost your temper like this, you will always lose. And then Thea will have the guilt of your death on her conscience for the rest of her life. She has been destroyed by guilt once. I won't have her destroyed by it again."
"It's always her," sneers Videl. "Everything you do, it's because of her."
"And I don't see any problem with it," says Loki. "If you ever have a daughter, you would understand."Videl glowers. "What about Victoire? I did everything for her, and look where that ended up for her."
"Alive," says Loki. "Victoire is alive, and it's because you did do everything you could to protect her.
"Whatever," says Videl, turning away. "I don't even know why I've been helping you all these years. I don't know why I helped Thea when you were off the ledge, I don't know why I ran around the world just to get those damn gems, and I don't know why I'm sacrificing my life and my people for your cause."
"You know why," says Loki. "And I'm sitting right beside her."
Videl stays silent, glaring at the high moon.
"Both of you..." groans Thea. "Shut up..."
"I didn't know you were awake," says Loki, tucking the covers around his daughter even tighter.
"I knew," says Videl inconsequentially.
"Stop arguing," she mutters, jerking the blanket away from Loki and covering her head with it. "You're both being annoying and I'm trying to get some sleep."
"You're not sleeping," says Loki.
"No kidding. But I'd prefer silence and trying to fall asleep than listening to the two of you blabber about the same topic time and time again." She presses the blanket harder over her head. "Now shut up. We have three days until we all fight Neidra and potentially die, and we don't need to spend it being argumentative toward each other. We just don't have enough time for that."
