"That is insane! You have to be exaggerating." I say in awe, playing with the straw in my cherry Coke. It was a drink fit for kings.
"No lie. One day I was just annoyed at my sister and I wished on a star for an older brother and then bam! The very next day dad starts dating some chick with a son older than me. Then they got married about 2 years later." He explains, chuckling at the memory.
"That's insane. I already said that, but god that's just insane. If only wishes really worked like that. Also, you didn't strike me as the Disney Prince type." I chuckle.
"Well, I might not strike you as a good kisser either, but you'd be surprised." He teases, winking. I roll my eyes.
"Anyways, My younger sister hates my guts. I'd wish we could actually get along." I joke. He shrugs as if to say 'maybe you will.'
"So if you don't mind me asking, what happened to your real mom then?"
"I don't mind. She passed away after giving birth to my little sister. Something happened during the delivery." He says, trying his best not to make the moment too sad.
"I'm sorry. I'm sure she was amazing if she had such a great son." I say, nudging his shoulder.
"She was. She was the perfect mom. Strict but fair. So what about your parents?" he asks, crossing his arms and leaning back in his seat. I like how he really looked interested to know. The focus was on me and it made me feel special. He was checking off everything on the list so far.
I feel my phone buzz in my pocket and jump a bit, startled. Since it stopped, I ignored it. It was just a text message. If it was something important, they'd call.
"My family. Huh. It's pretty typical really. I live with my mom, dad, and little sister. My mom is the strict one and dad's the lenient one unless it comes to boyfriends. And I guess my sister and I aren't as close as we could be." I say smiling. I think I'm starting to really like Jayce and it's giving me those butterflies I usually get when I'm around a guy. They make me feel kind of sick, but in an exhilarating way.
"I'm sure you guys would get along if you tried." He encourages, mirroring my smile.
"You're probably right. Maybe I'll see if she wants to do something later." I say thoughtfully. Suddenly, I feel my phone buzzing like mad, indicating I'm getting a call and frown. Jayce hadn't looked at his phone once throughout this date and I didn't want to seem rude, but it might be important.
"Something wrong?" he asks, sitting up straight.
"Nope. I'm uh-I'm getting a call. Just gimmie one second." I say apologetically, reaching for my phone. Darrin's name came up and I scrunched my eyebrows. What could he possibly want? I shrug and answer it.
"What is it Darrin? I'm kind of on a date right now. With half-pipe dude." I say quietly, hoping Jayce can't hear me.
"Are you serious?! So you just forgot to tell us that you actually can't come bowling?" He asks, sounding a bit irritated. Oh my god! Bowling after school with the guys! I totally forgot it was on Friday, AKA. today! I face palm myself.
"Darrin I'm so sorry, I completely forgot that it was happening the same time as my date." I say, feeling like crap.
"Wow. You know what Skye? Kenny and I waited here in the parking for you for half an hour. Melanie has been waiting for us. Screw you." he says, hanging up before I can say anything else. I bite my lip and listen to the dial tone go on and on. I know he'll get over it, but that doesn't ease the sting I feel right now. I quickly dial Melanie's number and pray she picks up, completely forgetting about Jayce momentarily.
