"Number...11!" the announcer said.
Number 11? Number 11...?
No. NO no No! That's not what he said...was it?! Pft, no, this was just some sick nightmare sent by god to teach me some lesson or whatever. I didn't just not win fourth place. I don't...I can't...mind rambles.
"Skye?" Jayce asks, noticing my lack of a reaction. I just...
"I didn't win fourth place." I say out loud, making it true as it miserably registered in my mind.
"In 3rd place we have...number 3!" I heard the announcer call, but I didn't care enough to listen attentively. I saw some younger woman go up to get her trophy and certificate and just felt horrible. I didn't win because Piper wasn't here...
Piper! Why did she have to go?! Why did she leave me?!
"Skye, it's okay." Jayce says, rubbing circles on my hand.
"Sky Blue? You're fine. I promise it's okay." He says, and I blink.
"Y-yeah. I'm fine. It's just a stupid competition anyways. It was fun baking with you." I say, shrugging off the slowly growing stinging. This was the first year I didn't place. No biggie.
"Skye." Darrin says, coming back and seeing me down. He pulls me into a hug and I feel a little better, but soon I just feel worse because now I'll just have to face Jayce's anger/jealousy now. I didn't need that on top of losing.
"In 2nd place...number 8!" he announces. I stiffen in Darrin's hold. Did I...NO WAY! I'm number 8.
"Jayce! That's us. We're number 8!" I say excitedly, shoving Darrin away instantly and hugging my boyfriend as tightly as I could humanly manage. He chuckles and whispers "I knew you would win something, that's why I wasn't worried. I just think you still deserved first." He says quietly. I shake my head at his ridiculousness. I'd never win first place. Never. I just knew it. I'm just happy to win anything. Quickly coming back to reality, I rush up to get my certificate and trophy and Whoop! I forgot I also get a gift certificate too!
"I can't believe I got second place! And based off of an accident at that!" I cry out in happiness.
"Fucking gingerbread house." Jayce says bitterly, watching an elderly woman collect the first place prize. It seems as though spring is as good a time as any for gingerbread.
"Congrats Skylar!" all of Jayce's friends chime in on que and high-five me, Zain grabbing my hand and kissing it just to aggravate Jayce. My boyfriend smacked him on the head and pulled me in for another hug which I gladly returned.
"This never would've happened without you. Thank you so much!" I tell him gratefully.
"Hey, it was all you. If you never dropped the blueberries, it wouldn't have been as good." He jokes and I roll my eyes but smile nonetheless.
"Well, we gotta head out. Later Jayce. Skylar." Dylan says, rushing Aaron and Reese back who was still yelling excitedly about how I won second place. Gotta love Reese. Huh, I just realized that Reese is the Kenny of Jayce's group of friends.
"Congrats champ. But Piper and I already knew you could do it." Darrin says.
"You're just obligated to say that because you're my friend." I joke, but thank him anyways.
"Can't believe you won second place Skylar! I mean, I believe it because your baking is awesome, but still! This is awesome!" Kenny shouted, shaking my hand violently. I laughed and group hugged all my friends as Melanie choked a "Congratulations" through it.
