"So how were your classes, Zane?" My father asked as he scraped his fork across his plate.
I stared down at the half eaten plate of food I was working on.
"They were okay, I've got some hard classes this year between ..Honors Geometry and Honors World Science" I said wincing at the honors part. The second I saw the few honor class's I had, I was bummed. I wanted normal classes, not many of my friends had honors classes and so I was left to fend for myself, having to duke it out with the other odd balls in my honors classes.
"I'm proud of you Zane..your honors classes.. My son.." My mother began as she forked up some salad.
"Thanks Mo--" I began but was cut off by my father
"Yeah.. he has a couple honors classes" My father began "But you could have all honors classes..you know.."
"Mark.. " my mother said in exasperation
"No, Mom.. Its okay.." I said and I lowered my eyes to the plate of half eaten food, my appetite suddenly disappearing.
My mother and father had begun to argue and I silently excused myself from the table. My father had always been this way, nothing I did was good enough. Over the years I had tried to come to terms with the fact I wouldn't be enough, but each time he said things like that it hurt.
It had been a few hours since I left the dinner table and locked myself in my room. My mother had come to the door and tried to see if I was okay to which I responded "I'm tired. Going for a walk later. leave on the porch light"
I tugged on my sneakers and grabbed my cellphone from my night stand and headed towards my door and down the stairs. I was careful to miss the creaks on the stairs, I glanced into the kitchen to see the oven light was on, meaning everyone had gone to bed. I sighed in relief, my hand reaching for the door knob.
I stepped out onto the front porch and inhaled sharply, taking in the midnight cool air. I bounded down the porch steps and made my way out onto the sidewalk, taking my usual route.
I turned around to check behind me on several occasions, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and my palms had begun to sweat. I shook it off, telling myself I was just upset about the dinner fail. My phone buzzed and I checked it; 3 unread check messages.
Two from Cassandra, which read:
Hey kid, what was up with the firey-googly eyes that Chris was making at you this morning?
The second one read:
Its okay you don't have to tell me, I don't want to be nosey. I probably shouldn't even assume something like that..
I reread her texts, only the slightest bit surprised that she had hinted towards Chris and Me, two males, although I had never been open with my sexuality, I had never been with a girl throughout any of middle school or high school. So it was bound to become obvious sooner or later and I guess that time was now. I pushed the thoughts away and responded to her text:
Oh you saw that too..
I hit send. What else was I supposed to say to that..?
I opened up the text message from Chris: On your midnight walk, I'm assuming..? Don't forget to text me when you get home.
I glanced up from my phone to realize that I was about to turn down McCormick st. and I decided to explore the park at the end of the street.
