I glanced from the right side to the left side of the street, both sides looking very unfamiliar. I had never been down here by car or foot and it was hard to see what was ahead because the street lamps had ended at the corner. The park was only meant to be occupied by day, lit by daylight.
But as I neared the park at the end of the street, I saw that there was a very dim light, that was the only source of light. I decided I'd walk down to there and come back.
My phone buzzed and I opened the text, the wind whistled around me, the wind was crisp making my eyes sting and water. Nights were usually always cold, but this night seemed colder.
A text from my mom read;
Haven't heard Nala barking, where r u? ur late.
"Oh come on.." I muttered to myself and shook my head, pushing my hair back from my forehead.
Thats when I heard a strange noise.
Whimpers and low murmuring.
"Don't you think ...enough... now"
The voice faded in and out, the wind whistled in and around my ears, distorting their words.
I edged closer towards the lamp, the dim light helping see only a few feet in front of me, not far but far enough to recognize there was a large body of water beside a chipped cement wall, which was only a few feet tall.
Then I recognized it, the canal that ran along all the back of the houses on our street, including mine.
The distorted voice spoke.
"Coming... enough already....our shit and go"
My heart beat picked up pace, double time when I heard the whimpering again, but I ignored the fear that was creeping up my neck and edged closer to the wall.
I then remembered the phone in my hand and fumbled with it, hastily entering the lock code, my thumb coming down on a flashlight app I had on my phone, my sneaker crunched over the gravel that lead to the canal a few feet away and I raised my arm out, guiding where the light went.
"Shit, there's someone" A voice said in urgency and then I heard hissing, the whimpering had turned to a loud groaning now and panic shot through me in uneven measures.
Something came into the view of the light and all the blood drained from my face.
A slightly tall, but young looking man. Possibly in his early twenties, stood before me, he wore dark jeans that slightly scrunched right around the part where his jeans had been pushed into his black buckled boots, a black v-neck and leather jacket, his eyes were tainted a light red and around his lips and chin, a red fluid.
And when the win picked up, it carried over the heavy scent of blood.
Time seemed to slow as I took in all of my surroundings and I felt my breath catch in my throat and I felt my body turn cold.
"Why aren't you running" his voice was low but it sliced through the quiet air.
My breathing kicked back in and my eyes flickered to the ground, where blood started to stream out from behind the wall and cover the gravel.
Run.
I took off, letting out short hard breaths, my feet seemed to barely touch the pavement. I propelled myself forwards, not daring to look back. I silently hoped that all those days during my freshman and sophomore year of track would pay off.
And as I reached McCormick, about to round the corner, a strong wind gusted towards me and I swear that I heard another voice;
He has to be found.
