"Turn up here" I pointed ahead, showing Cassandra where to turn.
As she pulled into the pretty much vacant parking lot of the park, my stomach immediately began twisting itself into knots. I wasn't exactly sure why my body was reacting this way, I couldn't have possibly been nervous. I was after all just meeting up with my best friend.. Someone I cared about.
Cassandra turned the car off and we sat in silence for a few moments, a comfortable silence.
Finally she took a breath and spoke "Well, we should probably do this."
I nodded in response and we both got out of the car.
The park itself was very large, large grassy hills and fields surrounded the children's play area which was situated smack dab the middle of the hills and grass. Throughout the park was a cement path that winded like a snake, lined along the sides were benches and lampposts that illuminated the path. It was exactly how I remembered it. Chris and I had named it our park because we often came here to talk, do homework and bullshit around. It was almost like therapy, for both him and me. But all of a sudden one day, we just stopped coming. He was always busy or didn't have the time to.
"So.. he hasn't exactly stated a specific spot to meet?"
I looked over at Cassandra "Well..not really. Actually, sort of"
Cassandra gave me a confused look.
"He told me to meet him at this park, this is the park we used to always come to and there was a specific bench table that we sat at. I don't think anyone knew about it because it's sort of down hill and away from the park" I said, looking off to the left, in the direction of the bench table "It gave us privacy and no one ever knew we were down there. It's sort of secluded"
Cassandra looked over in the same direction as me and then lowered her eyes to the open toed sandals she was wearing "Downhill you say? .. I totally didn't come prepared for this"
I chuckled at her "You don't have to go down, you know"
"Are you kidding? Chris is my best friend too, almost like a brother to me. I think I can sacrifice my newly painted toes.."
I opened my mouth to say something about Chris. Something along the lines of him being almost like a brother figure to me too ...but then I remembered the night he had come over with Alcohol and performed semi drunk Oral on me. And, so I kept my mouth shut and began trudging off in the direction towards the table bench.
We cut through the park until the soft grass ran out and turned to gravel. I'm assuming because this part was off limits to children, no longer considered the "play" area. After several minutes of walking through gravel the downward slant of the hill came into view and I turned back to check on Cassandra.
"I wouldn't exactly suggest trying to walk down hill.. It's too steep. So you're gonna reverse walk and carefully step backwards, you're gonna need your hands for support"
"So sorta like walking down a ladder?"
"Pretty much, think you can handle it?" I asked
She giggled "How much of a princess do you think I am"
She swept up her hair into a bun that sat atop her head, securing it with a hair tie that she always kept on her left wrist.
I chuckled at her but said nothing. Instead, I turned to face the downwards slant of the hill and began second-guessing myself.
But before I had the chance to turn back, Cassandra had already started down the hill.
I followed down after her, gripping onto the cold earth and roots that stuck out of the side.
