With all that was going on with my own thoughts, I was sorta thankful for Cassandra and her boy trouble. It gave me something else to think about, besides the fact that I had a murderer for a teacher, who had obviously snaked his way through the system. I cursed the cops mentally for not doing anything to put him away. I was afraid, I mean I had done something right? I reported seeing violent and suspicious activity by the canal..

I pushed the thoughts out of my mind, I had been at Cassandra's house for roughly fifteen minutes, listening to her spill her heart out over a senior guy, who had apparently been dared to ask her out.

"Have you noticed anything weird going on with Chris recently?" she said as she plopped down into a seat at the kitchen table "and by recently I mean today at lunch.. and this morning"

I sipped my Dr. pepper and popped a fruit snack into my mouth, sighing "You noticed too, huh? I'm not sure what that's about.."

Cassandra toyed with her messy bun "He stares at you like you're the most beautiful thing on earth.. and then other times he watches you like you're his enemy or something.." she trailed off as she directed her attention to picking out all her favorite fruit snacks.

"I don't know what I should do honestly.." I said, pushing my soda along the countertop.

"You know what I think you should do?" She paused but spoke again before I could answer "You should just talk to him.. I mean what's the worst that could happen?" She flashed me a reassuring smile, that provided no reassurance.

I shook my head and began to speak, but the familiar ringtone of my phone started and I glanced at the I.D, My mom.

"Hold on a sec, its my mom" I said to Cassandra as I slid my thumb across the screen, answering the call before pressing the phone to my ear "Hey mom, I'm at Cas--"

"Zane. I need you to get home, right away. Don't walk, I'd prefer if you took the bus." My mother said, a strange tone in her voice.

"I.. Okay, No questions right..?"

"Not until you get home. Please be safe. Straight home, understood?" She said in a rush "Love you"

"Love you too, Mom, Bye" I ended the call and set my phone on the counter.

Cassandra was looking at me with a puzzled expression "Everything alright?"

"I'm sure it is. My mom just wants me home. Probably to help with dinner or something"

But, I knew that wasn't the real reason, there was a hint of panic in my mothers voice, which was unusual because she had always kept a calm composure.

"So, I'd better get going" I said as I gathered up my messenger bag, phone and soda and Cassandra started to stand, coming around the table to head in the direction of the door to walk me out.

"Be careful, okay?" She said as we both stood in front of the door, me looking down at her and her looking up at me. Cass looked tired and even though she smiled at me, it was forced. And I knew that she was still hurt over the asshole who played her.

"Everything's going to be okay, Cassandra. Forget about that guy..okay?" I said as I stepped forwards to close the space between us, my arms going around her shoulders to pull her into a hug. I felt her nod and heard her mumble something inaudible.

"What was that?" I said, my arms coming down from her shoulders.

"I said you're a great friend, Zane. And a really good person."

I smiled at her in response and this time, mine was forced because if she had known that I possibly witnessed some sort of violent murder or attack, she wouldn't be saying anything of that sort.
