It felt like I had just come out of a dark, sound resistant tunnel. Like, someone had flipped a switch on all my senses to turn them back on. The overwhelming smell of bacon filled my nostrils and the sunlight shone through my eyelids. As groggy as I was I managed to crack open my eyes. I stared up at a very unfamilar ceiling and a feeling of panic shot through me. I pushed myself up onto my elbows and glanced around the room.. Hunter's room. I let out a sigh of relief and fell back into the fluffy pillows.
I slid my hand over to touch Hunter, but my hand came in contact with nothing but the sheets.
That were cold.
I glanced beside me to find the spot empty. And then I put two and two together.
I sat up in bed again, blowing my unruly bangs out of my eyes. And it didn't take me long to realize that I felt different, like my body had been turbo charged during the hours of sleep I'd managed to get.
"What's on the to do list today.." I muttered, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. My eyes fell onto my phone, which lay charging on the bed side table. I picked it up and unlocked the home screen, glancing at the time; 10:14 A.M. My eyes flickered to the notification of the little bouncing envelope.
3 Text messages.
The first two were from my mother:
Zane, when will you be home?
And then the second:
Morning!
Quickly I texted back, informing her that I was alright and that I would be home later tonight and of course, that I loved her.
I swiped my thumb over the envelope, opening the remaining text. It was from Cassandra:
Hey I'm dropping by Java Jam today to see you!
I widened my eyes, slightly alarmed. I had totally forgotten about what should've been my top priority, My job. But, instead my top priority (as of recently), was trying to figure out where Chris had gone to and worrying about Klaus and the nightmares.
I sat staring blankly into space thinking about everything when my phone buzzed in my palm, startling me. The notification popped up onto the screen, displaying Chris's contact photo below it his name flashed across the screen in large print letters. My breath seemed to catch in my throat and I opened the text and read:
Meet me at our park @ 8
I sat there rereading the text a couple times and shook my head, my fingers perched over the keyboard, I was unsure what to say. And shocked to say the least..
So, I texted back: Is this Chris?
I watched as the text had been sent and waited for a couple minutes, with no response and so I decided that I should get downstairs to the food.. and Hunter.
I padded down the hallway and down the steps, taking them two at a time. As I rounded the stairs, the scent of fresh bacon was even more overwhelming, which sent my mouth into a watering frenzy. I stopped in the opening to the kitchen and watched as Hunter flipped a golden brown pancake and sat it on a plate which was already stacked with more pancakes. The granite top island that sat in the middle of his kitchen, was filled with what looked to be Belgium waffles, topped with butter, the mouthwatering bacon, a fruit platter and glass pitchers full with different drinks. I cleared my throat and he quickly turned to face me, spatula in hand.
"Morning, sleepy head"
I couldn't help but laugh. A demon cheerful and making a breakfast banquet? "Morning"
He cocked an eyebrow and sat his hands on the edge of the island, leaning forwards "What're you laughing at?"
I shrugged and eyed the steaming food before him "Nothing. How long have you been up?" I licked my lips and stared at the bacon "Who's all this food for?"
He rolled his eyes "This food is for you, but you can't have any if you don't tell me what you were just laughing at"
I smirked and reached foward preparing to grab a slice of bacon but he quickly reached out and slapped the top of my hand "Ow!"
He grinned at me and tilted his head, an expectant look on his face. "Did you think I was kidding?"
I sucked in a breath and tried to keep the sarcasm and attitude at bay. "Firstly, I wasn't laughing, I was chuckling a--"
He opened his mouth to speak, cutting me off "Same thing"
"Let me finish" I hissed.
He narrowed his eyes.
"Secondly, I was chuckling at the fact that a demon was making breakfast and seemed to be in a chipper mood. I found it Ironic."
"And lastly?"
I rolled my eyes "Lastly, I don't get why you have to know my entire though process"
I watched him as he set down the spatula and then turned his back to me, messing around with the stove. No response.
"Eat breakfast and then I'll take you to work"
I wasn't able to see his face, but his voice seemed cold, angry. "You're not going in today?" I asked as he stepped away from the stove and out of the kitchen, leaving me with way much more food than I could eat. Because suddenly, I had lost my appetite.
