Mom knows best

I had to admit I was more than curious to find out why Hunter wanted to get me to his place again and I was a tad bit excited.

Overlooking the sea of students that crowded the hall, my eyes found a clock, which read three on the dot.  Behind and all around me were students pushing and shoving towards the front of the school, some scattering off in different directions to join their after school programs, some lingered along the lockers, saying their 'wet' goodbyes to their significant others. As I continued to stare longer than I should have at a couple kissing almost violently against the lockers, a pang hit my chest and a part of me wished that I had the same. Someone to look forward to seeing, spending time with, to kiss .. make love to.

The buzzing in my pocket snapped me back into reality and quickly glancing at my phone before answering, I read: Mom.

"Mom? Is everything o--" I started, a bit confused.

"Zane. This is your father. This is last minute but I'm here at school, waiting to pick you up" he said in a seemingly serene tone.

This caught me off guard. "Oh.. I'll be right out"

"Good. Don't keep me waiting"

And then a single beep and he was gone.

Almost instantly my palms began to sweat. My father never picks me up from school I thought to myself as I finally made it outside. The parking lot was completely flooded with more kids, scattered off in every direction, getting picked up, hanging around. As my eyes scanned through the crowd, they landed on Hunter who was talking to an obvious lower-classmen. The boy had a baby face, short brown hair and was seemingly pleased at Hunter who was standing more than close to this him. Something in me wanted to walk right over there and break them apart, but I couldn't. I had other things to deal with at the moment.

It didn't take me long to find my fathers black and very sleek Infiniti Q70. It was a luxuory car and my father had the money so it was something he could afford, he didn't work all the time for nothing, he always said.

Once closer to the car, I saw my mother sitting in the passenger seat, hands folded in her lap.

Uh-oh

I slid into the back seat, setting my messenger bag beside me.  "Hi Mom.. Dad" I said quietly. It seemed I could barely close the door and get my seat belt on before he pulled out of the parking lot. As I glanced out the back window, I saw Hunter leaning against the schools side door, phone in hand.

"How was school?" My mother asked from the passenger seat.

But before I could answer her, my father piped up.

"Actually that's what I want to talk to you about" he began "It seems that you've got your priorities a little mixed up..I understand you've been working but that doesn't explain why you've been totally blowing off coming home to go  and hang out with friends

I wanted to pinch myself for not seeing this coming, but I should have known. I knew that my safe bet was to sit in the back of the car and keep my comebacks to myself, because it would get me no where.

I stared out the window in silence, listening to my father gun the shit out of the enginie. I could tell he wasn't the happiest person in the world but then again he hardly ever was. I decided to take a shot at speaking up for myself.
