{ Layana }

I let out an excited squeel when I see it in the distance.

A village.

I start running as fast as I can, not caring about my aching feet.

I've been walking for hours, with thoughts of my dad tumbling around my head. Now I've found a village. Actual people.

People.

I was wrong, I wasn't running as fast as I can, but now I am.

I can hardly wait. I can finally see someone who isn't just in my memories and dreams.

Im here. I'm at the village. Finally.

as I stand there panting I scan the area for someone. Anyone. Just as my heart begins to sink back down into its lonely little whole, I feel someone tap my shoulder.

I turn around to face a boy who seems to be about my age, maybe a little older.

I dont think, I just wrap my arms around him in a hug. I feel him tense up then relax and hug me back.

When I pull back I begin to study him. He has piercing blue eyes and shaggy dark hair.

"Uhh... my name's David" he says shyly, scratch his head.

"I'm Layana! " I say beginning to ramble on excitedly, "I can believe I've finally found people! I've been walking and walking and..."

I stop, suddenly remembering that I still haven't eaten. Or washed.

"I havent even eaten or washed, although I did beat up a cactus." I say looking down at my feet.

I look up at him, and see that he's quietly giggling looking at me with kindness.

"Why dont we go into my house then?" He asks gesturing the small hut beside us.

I shrug then follow him as he leads me inside.

"So why were you out there all alone?" He asks scanning my scarred and damaged body.

Again one of the questions I don't have an answer to yet.

"I dont know, I can't remember most of my life before the desert. But my memories seem to come back in my dreams." I say happily, looking around the hut.

David nods slowly, probably confused.

"Can I spend a few nights at your house please?" I ask giving him the 'I'm lost and cant remember anything so please help me' face.

He looks at me for a moment, then caves.

Shaking his head slowly with a smile on his face, he says, "sure, but you cant let anyone see you."

"why not?" I ask slightly confused.

I thought we were friends

"Becuase, in this village, the people don't like outsiders." He says slowly hoping I undedstand.

"Oh" I say nodding slowly.

Suddenly there is movement outside and hes pushing me into a dark and isolated corner.

"Stay here." He orders.

I nod then he leaves.

I listen to whats going on with david and the new person.

"David, I brought you some food" I hear a woman say.

"Thank you Lisa." David says, and I can picture him taking the food from her hands as the smell drifts throughout the hut and into my corner.

"Did you see the hear about the new girl?" Lisa says.

I swear I feel my heart stop beating.

"No." He says in a tone that suggests the conversation should end.

"They say someone saw her walking through the village." She continues, inoring his tone of voice.

I hold my breath in the dead silence for fear of being heard. Finally someone says something.

"David why were there an extra set of footprints, leading to your house?" Lisa queries.

"If you are asking me if I am hosting this new girl, then you insult me." He spat.

I don't realize I'm still holding my breath until it escapes in a sigh of relief.

There is a long pause during which I can hear the heavy breathing practically feel the rage filled glare he is most likely giving her.

"You're right. I'm sorry" she stutters, clearly shocked by his outburst.

Then I hear steps leaving the house and David calling me back out into the open.

I step timidly out into the open still shocked.

"You didn't tell her about me" I say, or maybe ask, I'm not sure.

"No. If I had told her then you would've been sent away," he pauses for a moment just staring into my eyes, " and I could never do that. you remind me of my sister"

I see tears welling up in his eyes and I reach my hand out to him and he takes it, smiling.

"What happened to her? " I ask sympathetically.

He looks away and I see the tears slide down his face.

"Sh... she was caught ineracting with a outsider." He pauses and wipes the tears away.

I can tell this is hard for him.

"And they killed them. The outsider and my sister." He finally says.

I feel my own eyes begin to tear up, and I just lean over and hug him.

I know I need to go home, but until I remember where home is, I need to help David. He needs me right now.

I'm sorry daddy, I'll come soon.
