Chapter 33
It was early in the afternoon around lunch time. Caden had been reading a few files he was requested to read and Samantha was handwriting a report. It was defiantly not something you see around work much anymore but she's not the only agent who prefers to hand write reports over typing them.
Caden rubbed his eyes, trying to relax them after looking at his bright computer screen for so long. When he opened his eyes again he looked past his computer and toward his partner.
Samantha was also rubbing her eyes, her red glasses in her lap. She looked tired but they have not really done anything much today.
It was mid-afternoon and about time for lunch. Now was a better time as any to take a lunch break. Nothing much was really happening around work anyway.
"Wanna go get something to eat?" Caden asked, stretching his arms.
Samantha stopped rubbing her eyes and gently put her glasses back on.
"Sure. Can I pick where?" She asked quietly.
Caden smiled. He figured at some point she would have to stop being so shy around him right?
"Sure thing." He did not mind letting her pick.
Caden informed Anderson they were both taking their break now. Anderson had no objections knowing not much had happened around work today anyway. Caden still felt Anderson was mad at him but he never would give him the chance to apologize. Maybe he had just stepped to far. He just doesn't want to lose his friend..
Samantha was the one to drive since she picked the restaurant. It was not anything to plain or to fancy. It was just an average place. They were seated almost instantly which was strange that they were not crowded considering what time it was.
They had already ordered and sat in silence as they waited for the waitress to bring them their drinks.
Caden had suddenly noticed a bracelet he's never seen on her before. It was not expensive but more like one you would have gotten for free. It was rubber and was bright yellow with black writing, like a caution sign. He could only make out half the words; {- for Lane}
Samantha adjusted the rubber bracelet on her wrist and turned it to where Caden could read the full writing. He could see it clearly now; {Looking for Lane}. What did that mean though?
Caden looked up at her to see she was watching him read the bracelet. He realized she had purposely turned the band for him to see the writing.
At first he was going to make an excuse for snooping but then it accrued to him if she did not want anyone to see it why would she where it? So he decided to ask about it instead.
"Looking for Lane?" He questioned.
Samantha smiled to see him take interest.
"I'm surprised you've never heard of it, and I would be even more surprised if Rivers has never heard of it." Samantha admitted.
Now Caden was only more interested.
"What is it?"
Samantha had to think about it as if not sure of the answer herself.
"I would say it's a group of people searching for a missing person but that's kind of underestimating it." Samantha told him.
Before Caden answered he took a moment to try to remember the name of as many search parties as he can. The name still did not sound familiar.
"Where were they looking?" Caden wondered.
"France." Samantha replied.
Well that made sense, Caden had never been there and neither had Anderson. Why did a missing person in France remind Samantha of Caden and Anderson though? People went missing all the time in different places that ARRO was never asked to take part in looking for them.
"Why does this remind you of ARRO?" He went ahead and asked.
Before Sam replied a waitress placed down their drinks in front of them. They both thanked her and she went back to doing other things.
"Someone started this group when the police was to busy to look for them. That's why Rivers started ARRO wasn't it? To help people who didn't have to worry about being ignored?" Samantha wondered, wanting to make sure she remembered right.
Caden nodded reassuringly, he was completely interested in this group now.
"How long ago did they start looking?" Caden wondered.
Samantha frowned slightly.
"Three, four years ago, maybe more." Samantha told him.
Caden frowned too now. He was not sure how to reply or what to ask next.
"It's one of the saddest most sweetest stories I've ever heard. Isn't that bad though?" Samantha asked, almost feeling bad for saying that.
Caden looked back at her with a look that asked "What?" without him ever having to speak.
"When all someone's life becomes is a good story."
Wow.. Caden had never seen Samantha like this before. Openly talking without being shy, feeling truly sorry for a stranger that had something bad happen, or maybe Samantha actually did know these people.
"What happened?" Caden asked.
Samantha tucked her hair behind her ear as she began to explain.
"I heard about the group by chance. Danny was friends with someone who moved to France and that's how we ended up hearing about it. The group was started by a man named Brayan Adams, I think his name was. His best friend went missing and the police were to busy with things to look for her. So Brayan started the group, Looking for Lane, and found people himself to help look for her. I think the determination to find her is a perfect example of how friends are suppose to treat each other."
Samantha paused and smiled to herself. She really did like the thought of someone starting a whole group just to find someone they cared about. She then looked to Caden to make sure he was still listening.
Caden nodded insuring her he was still following along on what she was saying. Samantha continued on.
"All I remember is her last name was Lane, hence the name of the group. I hate I can't remember her first name though. It's amazing or ridiculous, you can chose which ever word you think fits, how many people found out about the story and either looked for her or kept an eye out." Samantha shook her head still in disbelief about it. "I'm not kidding when I say all of France has been looking for her."
Samantha held up her wrist to show off the rubber bracelet again.
"These bracelets aren't rare, about everyone in France probably has one." Samantha's tone was serious, serious to the point Caden knew she couldn't have been joking.
She began to explain again starting with a sigh.
"That was the sweet part and now there's the sad part. Everyone had been looking for her and she was never found. Not even her body. It's like she had literally just vanished off the face of the earth. There are a lot of rumors about what happened to Brayan but one day he just left France too, without a word to anyone. Some say he was killed, and what I believe and others say is that he left France to look for her somewhere else. People in France still keep an eye out for her but to this day no one has found Lane or Brayan."
Caden was not sure how to reply so he was thankful when the waitress came back with their food. Both agents started eating without another word. Samantha seemed unbothered by the fact Caden never replied.
It was an interesting story to hear and it did remind Caden of ARRO. It was nice to think someone else had the same determination to look for someone. It was sad to think they were both gone now though. The whole story just made Caden want to apologize to Anderson even more now. Their best friends and he does not want him to be angry with him anymore.
I hope this didn't seem random but it'll make sense at some point! If you liked this chapter leave a vote (I love votes!). Leave a comment if you'd like (They always brighten my day and help me become better at writing this story!).
