Chapter 62
Caden sat in the waiting room of the nearest hospital.
He was leaned over in the plastic chair with his face buried in his hands.
He was tired, worried, his nerves were on edge which made him feel shaky.
The last thing he saw of Amari was right before they took her to have an emergency surgery to stop the bleeding.
He could never remembering having such a heavy heart or anxious mind like he did at the thought of Amari possibly not going to live. Not even when he lost Victoria or Valerie. Not even for Tammy or Samantha.
He was done crying though. He has cried enough over this.
He felt a hand on his shoulder so he looked up to see who it was.
"Anderson?" Caden asked.
Anderson looked at him with sad eyes.
"You ok?" He asked.
It was silent. No he was not ok. Though he nodded a yes.
Anderson knew better, he honestly knew Caden was worried.
"Did the doctors check you out?" Anderson asked.
He had work questions to ask but he was going to be his friend before he was his boss.
Caden shook his head.
"No and I don't care. I'm fine." Caden insisted.
"What about your hand? What happened?" Anderson took notice of how it was bandaged.
Caden looked down at his hand and stretched his fingers, almost as if checking to make sure he could still use his hand. He could suddenly feel the pain from the gash again as if he had forgotten about it and Anderson reminded him.
"I cut it on a wire." Caden admitted, not mentioning it was an elevator wire.
"Don't you think you should have it looked at then?"
Caden wanted to deny it. He wanted to sit here until someone told him about Amari no matter how bad he was hurt, but then Anderson made a reasonable point.
"If I get a doctor to come take a look at your hand, will you let them? You can still sit here to wait on GOOD news." Anderson made sure he heard him say good, trying to assure Caden that Amari would be alright. Although he seemed to not even notice.
Caden had no reason not to agree so he just nodded.
It was quiet again and Anderson went to get a doctor.
He came back with a middle aged woman who looked as sleep deprived as them but somehow she managed a smile.
She unwrapped his hand and did not look happy at the sight. She reached in the bag she brought with her and took out a rag and bottle of something (he could not see the label) to disinfect the cut to make sure it was clean. She wet the rag and gently touched around the cut cleaning it.
"How long ago did you cut your hand?" The woman questioned.
"A few hours ago." Caden was not sure exactly how long ago.
"I don't know how you could stand it." She admitted.
He really did not feel anything, he even punched Anthony with that same hand (twice!), he must have just been so distracted he did not even feel his own pain.
She lightly dabbed at the cut itself, Caden cringed and stiffened his hand, and the doctor looked up to meet his gaze.
"You did a good job bandaging yourself up. It saves both you and me a lot of trouble." She told him, putting on that same smile from before.
