Chapter 28

2016 May

Valerie woke up to the smell of something really good. At first she kept her eyes closed trying to figure out what it was, but soon she recognized it as coffee and opened her eyes slowly.

There was a coffee cup with steam coming from the top, sitting on the coffee table in front of her.

Valerie yawned as she sat up on the couch and raised her arms in the air as she stretched. She looked around the place almost forgetting where she was. The blanket Caden had covered her with was still on her lap. She smiled to herself at how nice Caden was, grateful he just let her sleep on his couch.

She looked back over the couch to see Caden in the kitchen fixing another cup. Valerie looked back at the cup in front of her assuming this was hers then. She picked it up and sipped it slowly to keep from burning her tongue.

Realizing she was not even sure what time it was she looked around for a clock. It was 7:30am. Valerie let out an unsatisfied groan noticing the time. That's right.. They had work today.

"Morning Val." Caden walked over to the back of the couch and ruffled her hair as he said that, making it more messy.

"What's actually good about the mornings?" Valerie teased, repeating his same words from before.

Caden laughed and finally sat down next to her. They quickly finished their coffee. Valerie barrowed a few things Caden kept around for guests, like a hairbrush, and new toothbrush, etc.

Caden offered to drive her to work but she insisted to drive her own car so she could drive straight home after work.

Valerie eneded up at work first so she ended up with HIS parking spot. It's pretty much her parking spot at this point.

They walked to the front door and Caden opened it for her. They stepped inside and were greeted by Daniella.

"Good morning Caden," She shifted her eyes to Valerie. "and Jones." She greeted a little less happy.

"Good morning." Caden told her as always.

"Uh- Yeah- Morning." Valerie did not seem comfortable saying that so nicely.

Daniella narrowed her eyes after the two had already walked away. She knew it was strange for her to be nice and had a feeling it was an act for Caden.

Caden was unlocking his office door when he heard Anderson call him. Caden looked over to see Anderson a little ways down the hall. He waved his hand forward, motioning for him to come talk to him for a minute.

Caden looked at Valerie and then opened his office door for her to wait there for him. Caden walked to Anderson's office since he had already went back there.

Caden knocked but didn't wait for a signal to enter.

"Am I in trouble for something?" He stepped in slowly.

Anderson laughed at him.

"Should you be?" Anderson questioned.

Caden smiled and laughed too, shutting the door and then sitting down.

"When have I ever gotten into trouble?" Caden joked, causing Anderson to roll his eyes.

"I just wanted to ask if everything has been fine with Valerie as your partner." Anderson told him.

"Oh," Caden said, finding the question a bit odd. "Everything has been great."

It was silent at first.
