Chapter 50

2018 August

Well it has been a year that Caden has been partnered with Amari. She has now been his partner longer than anyone else. For a week or so after the mission to rescue the girl, known as May, Caden felt paranoid and frightened. Afraid something would happen to her. Yet this warning he was suppose to be looking out for never came. He has honestly forgotten all about it.

Caden was getting ready to unlock his office door when suddenly his smiling partner stepped between him and the door. He smiled back.

"Good morning." Amari greeted happily, handing him his coffee.

Ever since he bought her coffee she tried to pay him back. Then he tried to pay her back and that went on for awhile. Now it was just normal for them to take turns buying each other coffee. He honestly liked it this way too. He gladly accepted and immediately took a sip. The warm beverage was satisfying.

Caden was drinking his coffee when he looked over at his partner. The way she was standing made the necklace she was wearing catch the light in a familiar way. Caden nearly spit out his coffee from surprise and started coughing. Caden placed the cup down on a table near his door that had a plant on it for decoration.

"Where did you get that necklace?" He asked as soon as he stopped coughing.

Amari did not quite understand what was wrong with it and did not reply right away.

"Someone gave it to me why?" Amari wondered.

Caden did not answer. He unlocked his office door moving his coffee cup from the table outside to his desk. Victoria had a necklace just like that, alike in every single way. He always kept it in his office drawer and assumed firstly that Amari took it. He jerked open the drawer to see the necklace remained untouched. How? Was it just some very ironic coincidence? He looked up to see the bewildered look on Amari's face. She just stood at the doorway.

"Who gave you that necklace?" Caden asked.

He had a tone of concern and what almost seemed like fear. He walked around his desk so he was face to face with Amari. Only inches separated them they were standing so close. She honestly did not know who gave it to her.

"Amari!" He called sternly, wanting her silence to stop.

"Anderson gave it to me." Amari knew she had to reply something.

Caden looked at her as if waiting for her to change her answer.

"Anderson?" He asked confused when the silence remained.

"Well yes but no. Someone sent this necklace to ARRO and it was addressed to me. Anderson said it was probably some 'thank you' gift from someone we saved." Amari explained fully.

Caden took a moment to let the whole story register, not wanting to get anything confused. It did make sense in a way. Even he had received gifts in the mail, and yes a lot of the people they rescue are rich, but the two necklaces were alike in every way.

"Caden are you alright?" Amari asked him.

Caden could hear the concern in her tone and knew he was starting to worry her. The last thing he needed to do was worry her. He let it go.. for now. Caden shook his head.

"I'm sorry Amari, everything's fine. I was just confused for a minute."

Amari did not quite believe that but she had no proof.

"Well that's good." Amari tried to play it off like nothing happened.

Another great thing about her. If there was something you did not want to talk about she would leave it be unless it seemed serious. Amari then sat on the small couch in his office not questioning it any further.

Caden sat down next to her. There was a lot of great things about her and he would never forget that she saved his life from that explosion a few months back. That he never really understood either. Someone went to an extreme to attack ARRO. They never found who. Never found why. No one has tried to attack them since either. Maybe when they took down the people there that was it, that was all of them. Though Caden has felt lately something was not quite right about that.

She looked up at him. She looked at him as if knowing what he was thinking. It seemed she always knew what he was thinking. She smiled and Caden could not stop himself from smiling back.

"So Caden, James has a mission tomorrow and I won't be able to speak with him until friday when he gets home. I really don't want to be home all day worrying about him and-" As she spoke her smile slowly faded and her eyes shifted to the floor.

Caden stopped her rambling, completely understanding not wanting to be alone to worry about someone. He realized she needed something to keep her mind off of it and he honestly would not mind keeping her company.

"Would you like to hang out tomorrow Mari?" He simply asked.

She smiled, glad he had stopped her from rambling.

"Thank you Caden." She said, happy he caught on that she just needed some company.
