All the tributes gathered into the training room. They wore identical clothing, except that their name and District number were embedded on their shoulders and back of their outfits.
Their coach stood before them. She was a leopard mutant with black fur and silvery leopard prints. She had no hair, like Kat. Two small, round ears were atop her head, and she paced back and forth, flipping a machete in her hand.
"I am Lauren Kareng, your trainer for this year's Hunger Games," she announced, her icy blue eyes scanning the group of tributes slowly.
"In a few weeks, twenty-three of you will be dead," she said bluntly. "You wanna survive, you better train hard," she snapped, lashing her tail. She hurled her machete at a board with the outline of a person on it, and it lodged straight in the point marking the heart. Her muscular build and stance had already shown the tributes that she had been a trainer for years.
"Now, what I am about to say is very important. So you better LISTEN UP!" Lauren raised her voice, making Michelangelo, who had been talking to Sky, flinch and whip his head to the leopard.
"Sorry, miss," he apologized and quieted down.
"First of all, no fighting. You have plenty of time to do that in the arena. Second of all, there are four mandatory exercises. The others will be individual exercises. Lastly," she paused, "I suggest you focus on survival exercises as well. They may seem useless, but without good survival tips, you will be killed just as easily as being killed with a weapon. You will die from either dehydration, disease, infection, exhaustion, poisonous berries or plants, et cetera. It all depends on the type of arena you will be put in."
The tributes looked at each other. Some glances were uneasy, some glances had cocky edges to them.
Lauren clapped her hands twice. "Spread out, tributes! Come to me if you have any questions or concerns. And train hard!" she shouted, dismissing them.
Immediately, Caleb rushed to the weapons stand. He scanned them over, grinning when his eyes landed on a long spear. He drew it out, twirling it in his hand. The weight of the weapon was perfect, and he gripped it comfortably.
Kitty moved to the plant and insect identification station. She tapped at the buttons, thinking hard.
Meanwhile, Olivia moved to the snare station. The instructor taught her how to make snares and traps both for hunting and for trapping other tributes. Alexandria sat down on a spot near the girl, giving her a nod of greeting. The instructor turned to her and started teaching her.
Kat sat down on a log at the fire starting station, Shadow following behind her. She sat down parallel to Kat, giving her a small smile.
After a few minutes of spinning a bow, Kat finally made her fire. Shadow was still trying to buffet the two rocks to create a spark. Focusing on the two pieces of rock, she kept trying to brush them together. Sometimes, a spark would ignite, then fade away. She shook her head in frustration.
Kat sat next to her. "Here, let me try," she offered, and Shadow handed the two rocks to her. Rubbing the two rocks together, she struck them a few times, and a small fire appeared. Shadow stared at her in amazement and grinned.
"You certainly have a talent for fire-building," she commented.
Kat shrugged. "Hidden talent, I guess."
"Mmm, I'll come back later to practice more," she told the instructor, and he nodded.
Walking away from the fire station, Shadow had something in mind.
"Hey Kat? Would you like to, um, ally?" she offered shyly.
"Don't see why not." The cat mutant shrugged. "So yes, sure."
Shadow nodded. "Nice! See you around." She headed towards the weapons station.
Hazel waited in line for a simulation behind a ram mutant. He turned around, smiling.
"Hello!" he greeted with a grin.
"Hello, Chase," she replied calmly.
"So how do you think of the place so far? It's huge!" Chase remarked.
"Yeah...it would be nice, if we weren't here to die."
The mutant nodded in agreement. After a moment of silence, Colten walked out with a sword, waving to them in greeting. The two waved back.
"Anyway, I think it's my turn. See you later!" Chase said, running into the room. Hazel sighed. Everyone seemed so nice here...it would be a shame to see them perish. She thought.
At the climbing station, Penelope shimmied up a rope. Grabbing it tightly, she carefully placed her hands and feet on the stronger parts of the rope.
Sweat dripped down her face as she focused on her footing, succeeding at making it to the top. She slid down the rope, allowing Alexis to try.
Raphael sat at the camouflage stand with Destiny, both of them paintimg their arms to match the bark of tree trunks. The red-masked turtle stood up when he was finished, walking over to an artificial tree trunk.
"Hey Des," he called, "How does this look?"
The wolf-raven looked over from her work, and saw that the turtle had placed his arm on the tree, the patterns matching perfectly on the bark. She gave him a nod of approval.
"Great! But I doubt you'd need it, since you're green. You can blend in if the arena was a forest," she commented.
"Wouldn't hurt to try," the turtle replied, walking away from the station.
