Thinking About Family

The day went by quite peacefully. There wasn't any cannon booms heard in the distance. It was quite strange, considering how the arena was filled with the unpleasant noise these few days.

Perched in a tree, sat the raccoon mutant, Alexandria Woods. She was waiting for someone to pass by. It was happening. The even she had longed for in the training room is happening. One more person killed, one more step to coming home.

She heard a tweet beside her. She whipped around, coming face to face with some sort of blackbird, almost like a crow. Her eyes widened in surprise. The bird stared back at her, its eyes seeming to form to look like her sister's. Anna...

Then it flew away. Weird...she thought, turning back to scan the area.

"Alexandria! Alexandria!" A clear, high-pitched voice rang out into the air. "Help me!"

A piercing scream came after it, a chill going up her spine.

Before she even had time to think, Alexandria jumped off the tree, running towards the sound.

"Anna! Where are you?!" she screeched, weaving her way around the trees.

"Help!" Another voice screamed, but this time, it had a lower tone.

Alexandria stopped in her tracks, whipping around towards his voice.

"James!"

Then, at the same time, both her sister's and her brother's voice started screaming for help, but then it seemed as if their voices started to multiply and multiply...and multiply...

“No! No!” Alexandria shrieked, the voices torturing her mentally each passing second. A flock of birds flew at her. In fact, they weren’t birds. They were muttations, jabberjays to be exact. They attacked her, flapping their wings and nipping at her skin and hair.

The raccoon mutant wailed in pain. She had to this...as much as she loved animals, she had to survive. She took out her axe and brought it down on one of the birds. The jabberjay fell limp. She started swinging her weapon around randomly, more jabberjay blood spilled here and there. The birds started screaming even louder with her family’s voices, slowly driving her insane. Alexandria gritted her teeth, resisting against the shrieks of her family.

Alexandria brought her axe down on the jabberjays, each bird’s death becoming more and more violent. She started chopping their heads off, ripping out their guts, spilling their blood… But she loved it. She poured all of her anger out into killing those birds, she wanted revenge against the Capitol for treating her this way, she wanted revenge because they stuck her in this wretched arena, far away from her beloved family in District 12.

The raccoon mutant swiped the last jabberjay out of the sky, holding it in her hand. The creature struggled and squealed, and she dug her nails into its body tightly to keep it firmly in her grip.

“Alexandria!” It shrieked with Anna’s voice, and Alexandria’s jaw tightened. She didn’t want to hear her name anymore. Putting it out of it’s misery, she pinned it down onto the ground and embedded her axe into it’s flesh. She looked around, at the clearing filled with jabberjay corpses. The blood stained the grass red, as well as her hands. It seeped under her fingernails and dried up there, and it wasn’t a pretty sight.

A chuckle shook her body. Then it got louder and louder.

“This is what you want to see, isn’t it?” she screamed out to the Capitol. She knew they were watching. “You want torture people’s kids, don’t you? You cowards!” She laughed, but a tear streamed down her bloodstained face. Her knees buckled, and she fell to the ground, placing her hands against the ground. A few moments later, she was full on crying, crumpling the grass with her fists and ripping it out.

“You want us all to go insane…” she whispered, and her face hardened in disgusted anger. Unable to speak anymore, she wiped her eyes roughly with the sleeve of her tattered attire. Alexandria looked at her leg, where blood was trickling out. Holding the wound with her hand, she climbed back into her tree to treat it.

Washing it with some of the water in her canteen, she then laid backwards onto the tree trunk, resting her head against the soft bark. She stared up into the sky as it began to darken, wishing that she could just go home.

That night, there were three cannon booms. The faces of Darkness and Alexis Queen from District 1, and Penelope Sharma from District 2 showed up into the sky.

11 more tributes were still alive, including her. She wondered how this would all end. Her eyes closed, and she was overrun with thoughts before she drifted off to sleep.
