"As you know, you only have one day of training left. And that is today. Use it well," Lauren muttered. "I wish you all good luck in the Games." The leopard mutant walked away to her usual corner quietly, her tail swishing back and forth.
The group of tributes dispersed across the training area as usual, all of them determined to make this day count.
Seeing that it was empty, Michelangelo entered a simulation with a pair of nunchucks in hand. A hologram appeared before him, and he fought it, doing all kinds of flips and somersaults. He beat it with his nunchucks, yelling out weird battle cries and spinning them around.
He stood up proudly when his holographic opponent was defeated, exiting the training course.
Colten rushed to the plant and insect identification station for the fifth time in the four days of training. He was determined to master all the facts and uses of every plant and insect.
His focus was more of survival than fighting, and since he was already allied with the Careers, he wanted to at least give them a better chance at enduring in the Games.
The cyborg tapped at the screen, analysing the information. His face lit up when he scored a perfect 100%.
Alexandria scurried over to the climbing station, placing her hands and feet carefully on the stronger parts of the wood.
She gripped the branches of the artificial tree, pushing herself up with each climb. She reached the top of the tree, sitting down on a sturdy part.
Alexandria swung her legs back and forth, picturing what would happen in the Games. There, in a tree, she would be gripping an axe in one hand, waiting for a tribute to pass by. Then, she would hurl it at their head, the large blade embedding itself in her victim's skull with a satisfying crack.
The raccoon mutant scowled and flicked her two raccoon tails. She knew she shouldn't be imagining these vile images, nor almost take pleasure in them, but it could be her only chance to survive in these horrid forms of entertainment.
She watched Hazel like a hawk as she walked by, her fluffy hair bouncing with each step. Hazel hadn't taken notice of Alexandria in the tree, something that the mutant was slightly proud of.
Hazel headed to the knot tying station. She sat down with the instructor as he taught her how to tie different kinds of knots. Hazel knew most of them, which was easy for her since she was from the fishing district.
As she tied the rope into various types of knots, it brought her memories from home. Hazel remembered the time when her father taught her how to tie her first knot. She remembered the time when she got her dog, Winston. She remembered the times when her and her best friend Timothy would have fun and hang out. She remembered the times when she and her father would go fishing together on the river close to their house. All those good, old times brought tears to her eyes and made her long to go back home. To see Winston again. To see Timothy again. To see her father again.
Hazel sighed and blinked back the tears when she finished the exercise. She got up, gave the instructor a sad, tight-lipped smile, and walked away.
Olivia frowned as she saw Hazel hurry past her. She knew that she was sad and she wanted to go home. She did too, but it was almost impossible for that to happen, unless she won the Games.
She picked up a slingshot from the weapons rack. A slingshot wasn’t a weapon that could injure someone with one hit, and no one would really choose it. It was underestimated all the time, but in Olivia’s opinion, it was quite useful.
Olivia practiced shooting pebbles at the board with her preferred weapon. She aimed at the head area of the board instead of the heart, because hitting someone in the chest area wouldn’t do much harm. The most she could do with it was to make them dazed by a blow to their head. She preferred not to see the blood and gore.
Chase shrugged, picking up a spear that was lying on the ground. He spun it around and stabbed it into a nearby dummy. The ram mutant looked at it, knowing that his opponent wouldn’t just stand there and wait for him to impale him with a spear. He pulled out the long weapon, then started kicking it and punching it, whacking it with the spear.
“Impressive.” Chase heard a voice comment from behind him, followed by clapping. He whipped around, seeing a red-haired boy. It was Caleb, from District 5.
“Why, thank you!” he replied cheerily, giving him a grin.
“We haven’t talked, have we? This would be the first,” Caleb said.
Chase nodded. “Great job on your score. That was impressive.”
Caleb’s heart swelled with pride. “Thanks. You did well too.”
“Well, I’ll see you around,” the ram mutant replied, turning around to put the spear back on the weapon rack.
Caleb glanced at Chase as he left, his gaze lingering on the mutant as he walked away. The red-haired boy narrowed his eyes at him, raising an eyebrow slightly. A small smile flickered across his lips, but then disappeared just as quickly as it came. He walked away in the other direction.
Sky flew up and around in the flight station. She dodged the obstacles that were being thrown at her, zipping back and forth. She smiled. This could be fun if she hadn't been picked for the Games.
But it was serendipity that she got chosen, and she should at least make the most of it.
Sky was so lost in her thoughts that something knocked her backwards, making her lose her balance. She flapped her wings in one swift motion, bringing herself back up. She continued strengthening her wings from there on, pursing her lips as she did.
