13. Three Steps Forward

"He said that to you? And you didn't beat his ass? Wow. That's some strength there Meg." Anna said as she took a bite of her salad. Anna had came and picked Megan up so they could have lunch together.

"Yeah. I didn't wanna dig myself in a deeper hole so I just let it go. I mean he was kind of right. He just didn't have to be a jerk about it." I said drinking my root beer. It kind of bothered me how he yelled at me. I didn't like that at all.

"So you guys are back to biting each other's heads off. Why are you guys so bipolar?" She asked. I shook my head.

"I don't know. Oh, and I saw him without a shirt on today. Anna, I wanted to attack but I had to keep it together." I said softly. She laughed and threw her head back.

"I understand. It runs in the family. Him and Benjamin are a very fine specimen." She said sipping her drink. I nodded my head.

"What ever happened between you two anyway?" I asked with my eyebrows furrowed. She rolled her eyes.

"Well, I made the stupid mistake of sleeping with him while I was engaged and James called everything off. After I apologized a hundred times James finally trusted me again." She said shamefully. I sighed.

"Wow. Everybody has history in that office huh?" I asked and she nodded. "What I wanna know is what really happened between Alex and Maria." I said taking a bite of my sandwich. She shook her head.

"Nobody really knows what happened but we know she left him for some reason and went to Jeffery. Didn't you used to work for him?" She asked. I nodded.

"I did. It was interesting," I said trying not to elaborate. She titled her head at me.

"How was it interesting? What happened?" She asked. I sighed.

"Well, Jeffery and I dated for 8 months." I said and she almost spit out her drink. She grabbed a napkin and wiped her mouth.

"You what!? How come you didn't tell me this!?" She asked quickly. I sighed.

"Because I didn't want anyone to know. Alex was angry about me being from Baxter, and did you see the way they looked at each other at the company party? They looked like they wanted to kill each other." I said reminiscing to that night. That night where Alex and I actually had a good time together. That night that we almost kissed.

"Wow. I wouldn't want anyone to know either, but Jeffery is something you know. He is really cute. He seems really nice." She said looking at me with an eyebrow raised. I smiled.

"Yeah he was all of that. I really liked his eyes. They were this grayish green color and he knew that was my weak spot for him. He would look at me and I would get lost in them and he would have me wrapped around his finger." I said reminiscing to the days we were together. "But, now I hate him because he was cheating on me with Maria." I said.

"So that's what happened? This is like a crazy love triangle, or a square because it's four of you guys." She said swirling her drink around. "But if you do decide to get into a relationship with him, you're going to have to tell him about it." She said and I shook my head.

"I guess I'm never going to get into a relationship with him then." I said and took another bite of my sandwich. We finished eating and Anna dropped me off back at Alex's house. I walked through the front door. I took off my shoes and put my purse on the counter.

I went down the hallway and I was about to knock on the door when I heard movement in the room across the hall from the office. I leaned up against the door and it sounded like guitar strums. My foot hit the door while I stepped in closer to hear and the guitar strums stopped. I stepped away from the door and acted like I was going into the office. I heard the door open so I turned around to  get a quick glance at the room, but when I looked, all I saw was Alex standing there.
