Chapter 28

Within moments of knocking a woman around her mid forties opens the door. She had a sweet smile
on her face and was wearing an apron. She also was clutching a baby on her right hip and holding a wooden spoon with chocolate covering it in her right hand.

"Well hello there!" She greets me sweetly.

I smile in return. "You must be Katniss? Right? Carly phoned me up ad told me you would be picking Briley up." She explains. "I'm Mrs Barnot." She adds shaking my hand.

"Oh hello Joyette" She greets Joy. I look at Joy confused but she just gives me a reassuring smile. They must know each other.

"Come inside kids, I'll get the girls." She says leading us into her tidy white living room. The house was a sweet little small one. It was a dark wooden oak house with a dark shiny mahogany floor. Everything was tightly packed together and the kitchen texture was a sweet wood. Once she goes upstairs I ask Joy.

"How do you know each other?" Joy laughs.

"We live in the same town!, and her daughter plays with my sister Ivanna at school" She explains sitting down on the couch.

"Okay." I nod laughing. Just at that minute a little girl runs down stairs clutching a porcelain doll between her nail polished hands.

"Hi Evie!" Joy exclaims as the little girl cannon bombs into her arms.

"Hi Joy!" She replies giggling as Joy tickles her. I sit there staring at the two in awe.

"Hi!, I'm Evette but I get called Evie for short. I like playing with dolls and dressing them up" She explains to me smartly as she stands in front of me. One of her front teeth was missing leaving a gap. Her long brunette hair was thin and got in her eyes.

"Well hi there Evie. It's lovely to meet you" I say shaking her little hand. She gives me a cute toothless smile.

"The girls are upstairs on there phones. They went into the pool for an hour and we're taking photos all the time." She explains nodding her head. I laugh at her cuteness and so does Joy.

"Well okay. Where's Briley?" I ask the five year old.

"Right here Kat" A voice says from behind me. I turn around and Briley is standing there with another girl next to her. She gives me a heartwarming smile before hugging me. Her hair was damp and smelt of chlorine so I guess Evie was right about them swimming in the pool.

"Hey, did you have fun?" I ask her. She nods before gathering her stuff. "Well I want you too meet my friend Joy. We met at the beach this morning. Turns out she lives in sunset so we will drop her home on our way to Beverly.

"Hi Joy!" Briley greets her. "Oh Katniss I need to introduce you too the kids" Briley exclaims picking up the baby. "This is baby Eden. He's only 1 years old. And then this is Evette she's five. And this is my best friend Eleanor who's my age, 12." She explains with her hands on her hips.

"Well okay, it was lovely meeting you all but we really have to get going now, I have to drop Joy home." I explain to them leading my sister and my friend to the door. We say our goodbyes to the family and get into the car.

Me driving, Joy in the front passenger seat and Briley in the back. Just as I am about to start the car, my phone starts ringing. I reach my phone out of my bag to answer it.

I stop. No. No. No. I see the incoming caller. My heart drops. No my heart shatters. Again. And again. And again. The caller is someone I ran away from. Someone my heart belongs too. Peeta Mellark.

"Aren't you answering that Kat?" Joy asks me. I quickly snap out of my daze.

"Uh yeah I am." I say before pressing answer. I signal to Joy letting her know I'm going out of the car. I walk a few metres and stand under a shaded tree, trying to escape the bleaching sun.

Shakily I bring the phone up to my ear before answering.

"Hello?. . ."
