Running
That's all I can do, all I can think about. I can't comprehend what's behind me. The ruins. The valley.
"Y/n!"
I can't stop.
"Y/N!"
Just keep running, keep running, keep-
"Y/N!" My eyes snap open in surprise. Everything is a blur, I can't see anything but distorted shapes and colors. My chest hurts. No, my heart hurts. What happened?
"Y/n," the voice came again, soft and low. Just as soothing as when I heard it sitting in the Valley. I feel relief pull at my chest, and then a cool feeling slides tenderly down my cheeks.
"Don't cry y/n," Anakin said, stroking my hair gently. It feels good, soft and comforting. Like when mother used to do it every time she embraced me. Wait...
"Mum!" I call out for her as I reach a shaking hand over the side of whatever I'm laying out. I can barely keep it raised, but I need her, her hands in mine, her whispering softly of happy times and memories and love.
But her hand doesn't meet mine. Instead, I feel a large hand envelop mine, and, slowly place it back on my chest.
"Anakin..." I choke the words out. Everything is coming back to me...:
It was early morning. The copper Sun was shining harshly bright, as always. Yawning, I stretch my arms above my head, feeling the muscles in my body expand and stretch. Things seem calm today. Which is pretty unusual.
I move the tattered cloth from my doorway and see my mother sitting cross-legged on the floor, tinkering with some shimmering stones from the caves. I walk over and sit down with her, resting my head on her shoulder as she works with nimble fingers.
"Good morning y/n," she says sweetly, although her eyes never leave her project. "How did you sleep dear?"
I yawn again and rest my hand on her arm. "I slept pretty good, thanks mum," I stop to kiss her on the cheek. "Where are Obi Wan and Anakin?"
She turned to look at me for a moment, with mixed emotions in her eyes. "They went up to the Dreshdae settlement. They needed to trade for a new ship."
"Oh, okay." I find myself to be disappointed. They're leaving so soon. And I was just getting to know them, Anakin especially. He never quite left my side, for some reason he was always with me. Not that I minded, anyways. He had become a friend to me, and I had never had real friends here. It was a good change, a nice change.
"Y/n," Mother wrung her hands together, done tinkering at last. In front of her was a small circular stone bead, with designs and markings on it. It was attached to a seen wire. She must've been working on this for quite some time.
"Mother," I pick it up and examine the fine craftsmanship of the necklace. "It's absolutely beautiful!"
She smiled at me, then took it and tied it around my neck.
"Promise me you'll keep it with you, as long as possible. Please y/n."
I was confused at her odd request, but I obliged.
"Of course mum."
"Good." She then turned to me, and hugged me suddenly and tightly. I breathed in her scent, she always smelled sweet, like some distant summer. Her warm body radiated heat into mine. She ran her fingers through my hair and finally landed a soft kiss on my forehead.
"I love you, y/n." She smiled, but her smile looked sad and worn. I put my hand on her cheek, my eyes importing for answers.
"What is it, mum?"
She searched my eyes deeply, although what she was searching for I have no idea. Then she sighed.
"Nothing. Everything will be fine, just like you said."
And with that, she walked out of the hut and off into the distance. I assumed she had gone scavenging for food, or materials, or perhaps to trade with the underground traders from Dreshdae. Dreshdae was the settlement that contained the Sith Academy, which was built right in the Valley of the Dark Lords. We never dared to go there, for fear that they would follow us back and destroy the small piece of this planet that we called home. Not that we could stop them. They were just waiting for the right time to come, to savor our deaths.
The roaring of an engine overhead snapped me from my thoughts. I ran outside and, while using my hand to shield my eyes from the bright Sun rays, saw a ship quickly approaching. It was small, and with a grin I realized it must be Anakin and Obi Wan!
They landed almost directly next to the hut. When Anakin jumped out, I waved, smiling at him. But he rushed over to me with an intense look in his eyes.
"The box." He looked furiously into my eyes. I just stood there staring. What box?
"GET THE BOX Y/N! YOUR FATHER'S BOX! HURRY!" he yelled fiercely in my face, and I instantly felt tears well up in my eyes. Running into the house, I slipped and fell against the hard rock. Blood instantly began coating my knee and forearm. But I barely noticed as I ran to retrieve the box, unsure of its importance at the moment.
As I grabbed it from the shelf, I heard a sound approaching. A buzzing. And then, I realized why Anakin was so suddenly frantic.
They were coming.
Grabbing it, I hurried out of the hut, running straight into a nervous Anakin. He grabbed my hips and threw me over his shoulder as he simultaneously leaped into the ship. Just as we lifted off the ground, the ground we had once rested on exploded, taking with it our hut and the surrounding huts. I felt as though something in me had broken. I was surrounded by screaming suddenly, loud and shrill and near. I collapsed on the ground as we sped away, curled up with plugged ears and closed eyes dripping tears. The screaming continued long after we were off of Korriban's surface.
But after a hand rested on my shoulder, I realized:
I was the one screaming.
Feeling all of the pain inside me, there was only one thing I could think of right now.
"Mum..."
