haley's pov
"why did you take me here?" shawn asked as i led him to a small pond just a few minutes away from my house.
my heart plummeted, as i realized that the fourth destination i've taken him to is likely to jar his memory.
i took him to the place where we met first, then where we had our first date, followed by where he promised forever with me. when all those failed, i tried the spot where he asked me to be his.
"because this is where you asked me to be your girlfriend," i replied sadly, squeezing his hand slightly, "just over a year ago."
"i-i'm sorry, i-i just don't remember you," shawn said quietly, "you seem sweet, and from what you've told me we have lots of amazing memories. i'm glad i've been able to make you happy."
"you really don't remember anything?" i asked, my voice a croak as i glanced up at him, "even liyah?"
at the mention of her name, his eyes shifted. for a moment, i thought i brought something up. stirred something, maybe. but then the normal, very confused gaze he's been carrying around for the past week returned.
he shook his head and glanced down, the bruise on the side of his head now more visible to me, "i'm sorry. really."
two weeks ago, my boyfriend shawn got hurt playing football and suffered a hard blow to the head, giving him traumatic amnesia.
the doctors said that the memory loss is likely temporary, but since he suffered a minor conussion, when his memory came back was unknown.
he didn't forget everything, but he did forget about me.
us.
along with no memory of who i am, he also doesn't know who his little sister, aaliyah, is.
she was heartbroken when he woke up and was unsure of who she was, not knowing what to do without her big brother and lifelong best friend by her side.
i choked on a sudden sob, "haley-"
"i'm sorry, but i think i've taken you to all of the spots," i sniffled, pulling my hand from his slowly.
he reached out and grabbed my wrist, not hard, but the contact surprised me. i met his gaze, "i really, really want to remember you. please don't give up. and my own sister? how can i just forget about the two most important people?" his voice choked up too. "i need to remember."
"how about we just head back home?" tears were now streaming down my cheeks, but he acted like they weren't there; where usually he would wipe them away, "i think we're both tired and could use a break."
he nodded briefly and followed me in silence back towards his house. when i arrived at my driveway, i turned to him for the first time since the pond, "do you know how to get back to your place?"
"y-yeah, i'll see you around," he said, holding his gaze on me before turning on his heel and continuing the walk to his place.
despite him saying he knew how to get there, i watched. when he stepped through the front door, i let the dammed tears flow.
as i entered through the front door, i was greeted by mum. she seen my tears and pulled me to her immediately, rubbing my back as i hiccuped.
"he's never going to remember me!" i cried, my mom rubbing circles on my back, "i-i lost him. i can't believe i lost him."
"just give him time, sweetie. the doctor said this could be a long process. i'm sorry love, you haven't lost him," mum assured, "how about you go get some rest?"
