the only thing i didn't like about doing volunteer hours with the paramedics was the night shifts. you had to sit in the paramedic base and were on call all night. this was my forth night shift and they have been pretty boring with little or no calls.

i was in university to become a paramedic and my professor said i had to complete 100 hours of volunteer hours. luckily, i'm doing it in my hometown. i yawned sleepily and sat criss cross on the couch, studying for an upcoming exam. a man and a woman were sitting at a table across the room drinking coffee and the man who showed me around, darrel, was watching tv. another lady was grabbing something to eat and a man was on the phone.

it was a normal night, until a call came through to the computer. i remained in my seat as darrel went over, knowing it was likely something minor.

wrong.

"there has been a multiple vehicle crash on ninety seven boulevard road. thats about ten minutes away from here so we have to leave now. another site somewhere else in the town has dispatched ambulances and more are coming from away," he read.

i quickly got up and ran to the uniforms, grabbing one that was likely not mine and jumping into it.

this is the most action i have seen yet, so i felt anxiousness bubble up inside of me.

we all hurried to the ambulance lot, dividing ourselves into the three vehicles. i got in the passenger side and darrel got in the drivers side, looking at me, "this is your first actual emergency, do you think your ready?"

the sirens turned on, the other ambulances pulling out with lights and sirens wailing. we too pulled out, following suit behind the other vehicles.

"yeah, i'm ready," i said as cars ahead of us pulled over to let us pass.

"you'll do great," he said, keeping his eyes fixed on the road.

soon, we came to the scene that already had police cars and firetrucks surrounding it. the sirens turned off and we jumped out. darrel got the stretcher from the back and i followed two other paramedics to the scene. i was approaching the police when i heard a weak cry come from one of the demolished cars.

i swung around and ran to the car, seeing a girl sitting inside. the window was shattered and she had wounds from the glass along her arms. her forehead was sliced open and there was blood running down the side of her face. her eyes were shut and she was taking heavy breaths, trying to relax herself.

"hey sweetheart, you're okay. i'm going to get you out, okay?" i said, reaching through the window and undoing her seat belt.

"i'm s-s-scared," she said, coughing. she continued to cough until blood came out.

"damnit," i reached in and swiped away the stream of blood with my sleeve.

more tears left her eyes and i tried the door, but it wouldn't budge.

"darrel, I have a girl stuck in a car!" i yelled over the commotion.

he turned to me and brought over a firefighter. the girl in the car was now screaming and crying in pain, and i fought away a feeling of sadness. the firefighter called over more and together, they pried away the door with one of their tools.
