fright.

fright was all that consumed me as my limp body rattled around in the trunk of some strangers car.

i had left the mall with my friend and went separate ways upon arriving at the car park where we parked on different levels. i hadn't even made it to my car when i was grabbed. my blood ran cold when i managed to collect myself enough to realize i was being kidnapped.

i tried to resist, but when a cloth was pressed against my mouth, everything went fuzzy. my moment of weakness was enough for him to throw me into what i assumed was his trunk.

"somebody please! help me!" i cried, pounding on the top of the roof. my eyes darted around the enclosed space, not being able to comprehend anything.

i reached for my back pocket and when my fingers grazed my phone through the material of my pants, i let out a shaky breath through my teeth and pulled it out. i opened up the key pad and punched in 911, a cry rocking through me when the man slammed on the breaks. my body hit the front end of the trunk, pain setting in.

"911 what's your emergency-" i almost forgot i dialed for help, and the voice of the woman on the other end was relieving.

"i need help," i whispered, another cry rippling through me, "i-i think i was kidnapped."

"okay sweetheart, okay. stay calm honey. i'm going to get you help but we have to work together," a lady said.

"o-okay," i managed, sniffling as tears rolled down my face. i continued to look around the dark trunk, trying to wish myself out of this situation.

after the mall, my family and boyfriend, shawn, had planned to go to the fair for ila, my little sisters, birthday.

"how did you end up in the mans car? tell me all of what you remember," the lady said.

"i-i was leaving the mall and s-someone grabbed me in the car park and put me in t-the trunk. i'm scared," i said, my voice shaking.

"okay, we have your location from the phone you are on. can you tell me what the man or the car looked like? you'll be just fine," the lady said.

"i-i missed everything," i cried, "he grabbed me so fast and i didn't get to see his face. i-i'm sorry!"

'no sweetie, don't apologize. nothing is your fault. the cops have been dispatched and will be there to help you very soon," she said, "can you tell me your name?"

"k-kendra," i said through my tears.

"what's your last name?" she asked.

"richards," i whispered.

"okay, i have your information. stay on the line with me, okay sweetie?" she said.

"i will," i said as the car braked to a stop, but quickly accelerated on the gas again. i hit the side of the car again, "i-i hope he doesn't get away. i d-don't want him to take me." the thought made me break down, and whatever attempts i had at keeping myself together had failed.

"he won't, the cops are very close to you," she said, "you will be safe."

"i think i hear sirens, but he's not stopping the car. i'm so s-scared...i-i don't want to d-die," i cried through my tears, hearing the tires screech against the pavement.

"i'm tracking them now, they are right behind you guys. you're not going to die, okay? you are going to be okay," the lady said.

"what a-about my p-parents? o-oh my god, do they know?" i whispered as i felt the car being stopped. i heard the car door slam shut, and i stopped all movements.

"your parents were notified, what is happening now?" she asked, just as i slipped the phone into my back pocket.

in an instant, the trunk was opened and the man reached in, trying to grab me. i tried to slide away, thrashing as he grabbed me. i was pulled from the trunk and put in a headlock, gasping and grabbing his arm to try and pry it away from me.

police cars pulled up and surrounded us, the policemen getting out and pulling out their guns. the man grunted as someone fired, quickly using my body to shield his.

"hold fire!" a police man yelled.

they stopped shooting, not wanting to get me instead of him.

"release the girl, sir," one ordered, keeping his gun up.

the man holding me laughed, "not a chance."

another car pulled up, and through my fuzzy vision i immediately recognized it as mom's car. i fought back a sob as there was another shot. the man swung around and i screamed, trying to fight out of his grip.

policemen ran over to mom's car as her, dad and shawn got out, attempting to run over to me. they held them back, with much force needed to do the task. shawn's eyes locked on mine from where he stood behind a policeman, and i heard him yell, "let her go, you piece of shit!" he thrashed again, but wasn't able to move forwards.

i shut my eyes, "shawn, stop." i whispered, praying he would calm down.

"i'm going to tell you once more, release the girl," another policemen said.

before i knew it, i was shoved onto the ground. the man took off in a sprint, policemen chasing after him. i collided with the pavement and i sobbed, pain shooting through my knees and up my back. i curled myself up and tried to stop the pain, but it was there.

"we need the paramedics now! how far away is the goddamn ambulance?" an officer asked, running over to me and crouching down.

"few minutes off!" another replied, covering me with what i assumed to be a blanket.

"my knees," i whimpered, the pain being too much.

"they are a little cut up but the ambulance will be here soon," an officer said, though judging by the pain they were more than just cut up.

"kendra, honey, i'm right here," i heard from beside me, but it hurt to even open my eyes, "it's mom, i'm right here. dad is too, we love y-you." i could tell that she was crying, scared that i had fallen unconscious.

i found her hand and squeezed it, assuring her i was still awake. i felt lips land on my forehead.

i opened my eyes, looking up and seeing shawn staring down at me, "we are here, love, you're okay."

i chuckled meekly, "i can't believe you called a gunman a piece of shit."

shawn smiled, relief washing over his face, "i can't believe he thought he would get away with this."

"get my phone," i coughed, "from my pocket."

shawn retrieved my phone and once realizing that the call was still connected, said help had arrived before hanging up.

hearing sirens in the distance, i groaned again as another pain danced through my legs. the sirens got louder and louder until i knew it had pulled up to the scene. within minutes, something was placed on the ground next to me and i was lifted onto it, then being put on a stretcher. i was covered with another blanket and straps were placed over my body that held me secure to the stretcher.

i started seeing black spots.

i faintly remember being wheeled into the ambulance and my emotionally distraught boyfriend and mother stepping in the vehicle just as the doors shut. the last thing i heard was one of the paramedics assuring them that i would be okay before i fell asleep.
