mila's pov

after a long shift at the hospital, i was more than eager to come afterward and do absolutely nothing with my boyfriend, shawn.

he too was working today and welcomed me with open arms when i walked into the door.

"my love," shawn hummed, barely giving me time to put down my bags before pulling me into his arms, "i missed you today, how was your shift?"

i wrapped my arms around his waist, burying my face against his shoulder and breathing in the scent of his cologne. "it was okay, very long. i'm tired." a breathy chuckle left my lips and i looked up at him, catching his brown orbs already staring down at me.

he raised his hand and brushed a piece of hair behind my ear, a delicate smile pulling his lips upwards.

"how was your day?" i asked, reaching down and grabbing my lunch bag.

i wandered over to the island and put my empty dishes into the sink.

"we got three songs finished," he stated proudly, coming over to where i stood.

"ouu," i wiggled my eyebrows as i peeled a banana and popped a piece into my mouth, "can i listen?"

shawn put his hand up, "nope. no spoilers for when it comes out next month."

i sighed in defeat, despite already knowing that he wasn't going to let me listen to even three seconds of any song he wrote.

when i tossed my banana peel into the trash and looked up at him, i took notice of the dark circles that were evident underneath his eyes.

even though our jobs were very different, it didn't mean that one was easier than the other. every day, shawn woke up before me to make breakfast and pack my lunch; both of which he knows he doesn't have to do. after i leave for work, he follows shortly behind. finishing only an hour before me, it proved that he put in just a long a day as i did.

"you look tired, babe," i said, tucking my lunch bag away.

shawn shrugged off the comment, "not that much, no."

i leaned against the island and crossed my arms, arching a brow at him. he caved, "okay, maybe a little. it was nonstop today"

"it's late," i said, approaching him and grabbing his hand, "how about we go to bed early, maybe put on a film?"

shawn squeezed my hand, "i'd love that."

we ventured up the stairs and into our room, where we both got changed into comfier clothes. once in bed, we mutually decided to watch a few episodes of friends. i curled close into shawn's side and his arm went around me, his fingers tracing patterns against the back of my shirt softly.

"i'm happy you're day was better-" shawn cut himself off, "i'm sorry, that sounded insanely insensitive."

last week, i had lost a patient, a little boy, that i was extremely close with. i was his nurse, and for the longest time, we all thought he would get better. his sickness claimed him, though, and he passed away.

i was devastated and entered the mindset that i could have done something to save him.

"it wasn't insensitive," i shook my head, "i'm glad that days are becoming easier, too."

shawn was quick in kissing my head, "i don't know how you do the things you do every day. you see crazy things and come home with the biggest smile on your face. i don't think i will ever understand how strong of a person you need to be to do that."

i felt my cheeks heat up, "stop."

"i'm serious," he shook his head, looking down at me, "i don't think i would ever be able to be a nurse or doctor. i mean, what if something happened to a family member, and you had to see them sick?"

i sat up and looked at him, knowing he was referring to the time his mother had been injured and came into the emergency room. i squeezed his hand, "it's a risk you take, being a nurse. you just have to relax and believe that they will be okay. like your mom."

shawn smiled faintly, "i remember. everyone was hysterical, panicking and yelling, but you managed to be calm; while assuring all of us that she would be okay."

"it's what i had to do, i can't let emotion get in the way of my work," i said, rubbing my thumb across the back of his hand.

shawn sighed, smiling as he bit into his bottom lip, "all i'm saying is i think you are really good at what you do."

"thank you," i leaned back into his embrace and tilted my chin up, his lips meeting mine.

when he pulled away, his nose brushed against mine, "want to know something else?"

"sure," i giggled, tucking my head into the crook of his neck.

"every day," his voice was quiet, "i fall more in love with you."

i felt my cheeks erupt into flames, and i was grateful for the dark room we were in so he couldn't tease me about it.

with his words still echoing around my head, i let my eyes fall closed. i hadn't realized how tired i was until i felt the weight of slumber pressing down on me. with our hands still tangled together, i gave one final squeeze before i fell asleep in his arms.
