britney's povi woke up to thin strips of light coming through the cracks of the curtains, illuminating shawn and i's shared bedroom. i smiled at him sleeping, realizing that today was his birthday. last night, our nine year old daughter, jane, went over to her friend lauren's with the exception that she came home fairly early to spend time with shawn. we planned on going to the movies and to the fair, on behalf of jane's request.
shawn's eyes fluttered in his sleep and soft snores escaped his lips. i smiled softly and slid closer to him, running my hands through his messy hair. the action caused his eyes to flutter open and stare tiredly into mine. i instantly smiled at the sight.
"morning princess," he said in his morning voice, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"morning birthday boy," i said, leaning over and kissing him.
"how was your sleep-" shawn was cut off my my cell phone ringing.
i stretched over and grabbed my phone off of my bedside table, seeing that it was the toronto general hospital calling. i sat up immediately, swiping my thumb across the accept button and pressing the phone against my ear.
"hello?" i say, my voice already shaking.
the hospital has never called me before, so i was nervous.
"hello, would this be the parent or guardian of jane leah mendes?" a voice asked, causing my heart to stop. i reached for Shawn's hand, who was waiting for an explanation.
"yes," i said shakily, "i-i am her mother."
shawn's hand tightened around mine, his face paling over.
"i'm sorry to inform you that jane was involved in a car accident earlier this morning and was brought in to the emergency department. she is in stable condition, but is very shaken up. her spine was dislocated, along with her hip. she had a laceration on her forehead but other than that, she will be okay. in a lot of pain, but okay. could you come in as soon as convenient for you?" the lady said.
"oh god, yes, we-we'll be right there," i mumbled, hanging up.
"what's going on?" shawn asked, his expression changing when i turned to him with tear filled eyes.
"j-jane was in a car accident, s-shawn," i mumbled, watching as his jaw dropped. he scrambled out of bed and hurried to the closet, grabbing a shirt and pulling it on. he changed from his sleep pants to a pair of sweats, pulling on a hoodie overtop.
i stood up and shawn seen my state, dropping what he was doing and hurrying over to me. i knew he was crying too, but he pulled himself together to calm me. he pulled me into his chest and i cried, not being able to get my head around the fact that jane could have died today.
"shhhh, it's okay," shawn mumbled, kissing the top of my head repeatedly.
"what if she doesn't make it shawn, she's only nine. i-i-"
"she'll be okay britney, lets hurry though okay? she is likely scared," shawn said as i pulled away from him and quickly pulled on a pair of leggings and a new shirt, throwing on a sweater over it and pulling my hair into a ponytail.
shawn sniffled and i seen a tear fall down his cheek. i hugged him again and we left our room, hurrying downstairs and pulling on our shoes. shawn grabbed the keys and we went to the car. he got in the drivers seat and instantly took my hand in his, squeezing it reassuringly.
we were both crying.
lauren's mom must have driven her here and crashed before she got here. just down the block from our place, there was a scene that was sectioned off by caution tape with policemen walking around and talking to each other.
