maddie's pov

"why the hell were you taken home by the cops?" noah, my older brother, asked as soon as i walked through the door.

"noah!" mom scolded, lightly hitting his arm, "honey, your leg is bandaged. what's going on?"

my chin quivered, "there was a-an a-accident."

"what happened?" noah's voice was soft now.

i told them everything.

shawn running ahead of me, the car ignoring the red light and striking shawn, the paramedic telling me the chances of him making it were slim.

noah came towards me before pulling me into his chest, where i began to cry hysterically. if it wasn't for his arms holding me up, i would have fell to the floor. he tried to calm me, but nothing aided the burning and ripping sensation that was wild in my chest.

i could hear mom and dad mumbling to each other, when noah pulled me away from him.

"can s-someone take m-me to the hospital, i-i need to see if he's o-okay or n-"

"i'll take you, let's go," noah said quickly, grabbing the keys and opening the door.

we went to the car and got in, driving to the hospital. when we pulled up, we both got out and hurried towards the main doors. we walked in and i was immediately overwhelmed by the smell of hand sanitizer and rubber gloves.

"i'll be in the waiting room, come and get me when you hear anything on shawn," he said, grabbing my hand and squeezing it once before disappearing into the empty waiting room.

i nodded.

"um, I'm here for shawn m-mendes, i need to know if he's okay or not," i said to the lady who sat at the main desk, "he was just brought in."

"follow me to the doctors office, he has the patient files," she said before taking me to a closed door.

"i have a girl here who wants a follow up on shawn mendes," she said before stepping to the side so i could walk in.

"sit please, i will update you on your friend," a man said. i sat down in a chair that was opposite of him and he looked up at me, noticing my tears and handing me a box of tissues. i took one and wiped my eyes, placing the fabric on my lap, "i'm actually his doctor directly, my name is doctor stanley."

he grabbed a folder and placed it on the desk in front of him, flipping through a few pages before pulling one out.

he read over it, mumbling a few things to himself before looking up at me.

"what do you know?" he asked, folding his hands together on his desk.

"i was t-there," i croaked, "i watched the car hit him. he was only conscious for two minutes before he passed out. the paramedic, she said-" i couldn't continue, a sob wracking through me, "-she said he didn't have a pulse. she couldn't find one."

the doctor remained quiet, so i continued, "u-uh, that's all i really know."

the doctor hummed, "well the paramedic was right. shawn came in with no pulse. the defibrillator was used on him, and he came back right before he arrived here. he was rushed straight to surgery, where he still is, but the last i checked in, shawn was alive."

i let out a breath, my hand clutching my chest.

"he isn't in good shape, though," he continued, "a lot of damage was done, his lower half having suffered the most. a full knee replacement is happening on his right knee, and a rod is being placed through his hip and pelvis bone on both sides to realign his bones."

"w-will he be able to walk?" i hiccuped, "wait, will he survive t-the surgery?"

"he's pulling through so far," the doctor nodded, "and yes, eventually he will walk. but right now, no, his bones must remain stable for at least one week to allow proper recovery."

i sniffled, nodding slowly.

"is there any other questions that i can answer for you?" he asked.

i shook my head.

he nodded, "when updates about him are given to me, i will come update you."

"okay," i nodded, pushing myself to my feet and wincing.

"are you okay?" he narrowed his gaze.

"i sliced my leg, a paramedic bandaged it for me," i said meekly, "it's kind of sore."

"mind if i take a look?" he asked, standing up.

i shook my head, and he lead me to an examination room just off the waiting room. noah seen me, and instantly stood up to follow.

"he's alive," i breathed, "still in surgery."

he nodded, "where are we going?"

before i could reply, the doctor opened a small door and i stepped inside. he patted the examination table, and i pushed myself onto it.

"i'm just going to take a look at her leg, she said she sliced it," the doctor said, sitting on a stool and pulling on a pair of gloves.

i rolled up my ripped pant leg and he pulled away the bloody bandage. i looked away, blood making me more uneasy then i already was.

he felt around, a sting sitting in the path of his touch.

he glanced up at me, "i think you may need a few stitches. the bleeding is a little excessive."

i gulped, feeling noah rub my shoulder.

he prepared the freezing and sterile needle. to take my mind off things, noah's voice piped up, "you know shawn will pull through."

"i hope he does," i choked, feeling the needle puncture my skin.

"he will," noah said, "i'm sorry you had to see everything."

he continued to talk to me, calming me whenever i flinched. when he was finished, he wrapped a new bandage around the incision and removed his gloves, "good as new."

"thank you," i nodded as noah guided me to my feet.

he smiled, holding open the door for me as i walked out.

as i exited, i seen karen, manny, and aaliyah at the front desk. i could hear aaliyah crying, and manny had his arm around her as an attempt to calm her down.

"guys," i croaked, causing them to reel around and face me.

"maddie, you heard? that shawn was in an accident?" aaliyah croaked, running into my arms.

i looked up at karen, who was eyeing my leg, "i-i was there." her gaze instantly lifted to mine, and her eyes went wide.

"i seen the car hit him and-" my voice broke, and it was a matter of only seconds before another wave of tears hit me.

i was breaking apart at the seams, and if shawn doesn't make it out of this, i don't know what i will do
