wren's pov

my phone ringing took me out of my sleep.

groaning, i reach an arm out from underneath the blankets and snatch it off my bedside table, the brightness momentarily blinding me. the first thing i noticed was that it was only six in the morning. recognizing the caller id as one of my friends, ann, i swiped the green icon.

"hello?" i said, my voice hoarse due to being asleep only moments ago.

"hey, yeah, how fast can you get to the base? there is a pile up on the highway and lots of trauma. we need you, even though your not working," ann said, her voice panic stricken.

"oh god," i moved my sleeping boyfriend, shawn's arm from my waist and got out of bed, "i'll be there as soon as i can."

i hung up and rushed to my closet, swinging open the doors. i struggled in the dark but eventually found my uniform. i went to the bathroom and got changed, quickly washing my face and brushing my teeth. i grabbed an elastic and pulled my hair back into a messy bun, a sigh slipping past my lips.

i was taking a two year paramedic course and it was very rare that calls like these happen. my friend ann, who is also taking the same course, was working night tonight and called me in to help. i was nervous, because you only call other paramedics in when it is serious. what made me even more nervous was that we were both still interns, and it was tragic if an intern got called in to help on their days off.

shaking away my nervousness, i opened the bathroom door and shut it behind me.

i crept silently back to our room, wanting to grab my phone and get to the paramedic base as quick as possible. i snatched the phone and turned around, stopping in my tracks upon hearing shawn's quiet voice.

"is everything okay, wren?" he asked as i turned to face him.

"yeah," i whispered as he reached over and turned on the bedside table lamp, "there's a pileup on the highway and lots of trauma. i don't know how bad it is but i'm an intern, they never call interns in for stuff like this unless it's serious."

"hey," he mumbled, cutting off my rambling, "come here, you will do just fine."

i hurriedly ran over to where shawn now sat in bed, and leaned in for a hug. he quickly kissed my cheek and gripped my shoulders gently, "this accident is your chance to prove to your chief that you are a kick ass intern. i love you, wren. now, go save lives." he winked before kissing my forehead once more.

"i'll see you when i get back," i said, removing myself from his embrace and hurrying out the door.

i ran down to the kitchen and grabbed the keys, pulling on my shoes and dashing out the front door. i got in my car and wasted no time in reversing out of the driveway and heading to the paramedic base.

when i pulled up, two ambulances pulled out with their sirens blaring and lights flashing.

i turned off my car and put the keys in the console, getting out and running inside.

"glad you could make it wren, let's go!" the chief said, gesturing towards an ambulance.

i nodded and got in the passenger side as he got in the drivers. he started the car and we were off. incoming cars pulled to the side of the road to let us pass, and i felt my heart clench in my chest.

"i know you are only an intern and we usually don't get interns to help us with accidents like this but we need everyone we can get," the chief said, looking at me quickly.
