Farewell Summer by grandestnerd
The last seconds of summer slipped by almost unnoticed by those who's eyelids grew heavy as the first day of school awaited them in the morning.
The sun so blinding and blistering hot, small clouds shrinking in the heated bright blue sky, friends, family, picnics, no worries, and best of all it was a Monday! I could do what ever I pleased with my time. Take a hike up the tallest mountain I can find and camp for the night before venturing down to the bottom the next morning, go to an outdoor concert and loose my voice from staying up all night cheering and singing along as loud as all the rest only to sleep in as soon as the sun comes up again, or even use each twenty four hours of the 92 days of summer to search through and read through tumblr and Facebook feeds.
Summer a relief for the minds of those tortured in the prison like school system.
a hard knock at my door alerted me to the reality outside of my dreams. Without a word I heard retreating footsteps on the hard wood floor.
Confused I pulled my phone from beneath my pillow, simply to find the time.
I had expected it to read some time early morning by the way the sun was hardly beginning to peak over the treetops.
My phone read six twenty and the green light began to flash indicating I had an incoming call.
"Hello?" I answered half awake and a bit grumpy.
"You lazy bum! I thought we agreed we'd be here early for the free coffee stand?"
my friend hollered into my ear, successfully waking me up to the fullest. All hope of retrieving even a few more seconds of blissful sleep thrown out the window.
Realization chose then to dawn on me though, today was the first day of school I must of forgotten to set my alarm.
I dashed across my room to the closet.
Ripping a pair of jeans out along with a playful top I called to my mom in the kitchen pleading for a ride, since I had missed the bus long ago.
She reluctantly agreed before lecturing me on the importance of being on time, all the while I struggled to get ready with the uncoordinated grace of a small child.
By the time I arrived at school most of the other students were there too. I found my best friend she ran up to me and gave me one her famous and dearly missed bear hugs.
"What'd I miss?"
"The lattes!" she said lightly slapping my shoulder.
It was good to be back in school.
