The hearing went...well, it went.
Castile wasn't sure he could call it a success or not. Gabriel and Balthazar were being moved to a foster home, which is probably better than Michael, but the family was made up of strangers. Castiel got emancipated. Another good thing, but since Michael wouldn't sign the papers willingly Castiel has to tell his story of beatings and alcoholism. Little to say the judge was appalled, sentenced his brothers to a foster home, allowed Castiel to be recognized as an adult in the eyes of the law, and sent people to check up on Michael's activities. Apparently he couldn't be arrested, Castiel didn't know why, but he was still free.
So far some successes that came from some not so great things. Castiels brothers were safe. Good. He was free from Michael. Good. Michael was almost totally out of their life. Another good. But Castiel didn't have custody of his brothers which meant he'd have to wait at most four, almost five years to live with his family. Not so good.
The judge noted Castiel's want to have custody and told him he'd schedule another hearing in a mouth. Within that time if Castiel could get a job, a home, and income that can sustain a family of three, then he would have a better chance of being able to take care of his brothers. So nothing was set in stone. Actually, Castiel doesn't even have a stone, more like a pile of rubble.
I need a job. That's easy enough, sure, but a job that allows me to make enough money to keep my family alive at the young age of seventeen? That might be a little harder. Oh, then I need a house... Right, because those are just handed to newly emancipated teenagers.
The judge was clear in all the reasons he gave for wanting Castiel to get a job; money, obviously it's needed to stay alive. A income that can sustain a family of three; also obvious, there are three people Castiel needs to take care of, himself included. Then the house; Castiel had to be able to support his own family. Bobby couldn't be the one doing it. Not to mention that even if Castiel were allowed to stay with the Winchesters there wouldn't be enough room.
It's fucking hopeless.
Maybe I should just leave them in the foster home, I bet they'd live a better life with whoever's taking care of them than they'd have with me...
After the hearing Castiel stood up and walked out with Sam, Bobby, and Dean. They waited outside, Dean reached out and grabbed Castiel's hand, holding it silently. It was comforting. They'll understand right? Castiel asked himself. Gabe and Balth are better off without me.
The two boys walked out a moment later, there was a cop following them, ready to take them to social services where they'd be placed with a foster family. Balthazar looked emotionless, that was the first thing Castiel noticed. Gabriel looked sad, Castiel was sure his face was shrouded in a similar expression. He felt Dean squeeze his hand.
His brothers came up to him, Gabriel didn't say a word, he just hugged Castiel. The older boy had to let go of Dean's hand to reciprocate the embrace. Balthazar looked at the two, the cop was behind him and Castiel could tell Balthazar didn't like the fact someone with authority was so close. He also probably didn't like the fact he would have to trust him till he could get away. Balthazar was like that, Castiel didn't know why he was against people who were held at a high degree of stature, but he was, and has been for a couple of years at least. Castiel could remember when Balthazar kept changing his mind about wanting to be a cop and a firefighter, he remembers their dad telling him he could be the first firefighting cop...

Fanfiction"So, I know Mr. Shurley said this was for English," Dean spoke, making Castiel's stomach flutter. How could a voice do that? He thought. "But I was going to ask you to- uh-" he rummaged in his backpack and took out a crumbled piece of paper. "Do you...
