It's been a while- and this is short...sorry...

Despite everyone claiming they missed the brilliant mind that was Ash, it wasn't a surprise when the funeral ceremony was fairly small. Ash's immediate family was there, the Harvelles came, Castiel and his brothers, Sam, Dean, and Bobby. One of Ash's uncles came too.

Castiel wasn't too familiar with Ash's family life, he knew that the boy didn't like to talk about his family. It never seemed like there was a huge problem, Ash didn't get along with his mom that well, and Ash hated his stepdad. Castiel didn't want to pry into topics that Ash seemed emotional about.

Sometimes he wondered if he had felt more comfortable asking about those sensitivities Ash would've been alive right now.

It was closed casket. There wasn't any damage to his face or body that would've caused the casket to be sealed, but Ash's parents still kept it closed. Castiel didn't like it, but he didn't exactly get a say.

The burial part was right after the wake. The sky was grey and Dean wrapped an arm around Castiel's shoulders. A priest said a few words, which Castiel knew Ash wouldn't enjoy. Ash wasn't a very religious person, or at all really. They placed flowers on the casket and then it was lowered into the ground. Ash's parent's left right away. Dean stayed and said a few words privately while Castiel talked with his brothers, Sam, and Jo. It was mostly polite words and absent conversation. Gabe and Sam, Castiel noticed, stuck close together.

When Dean came back, Jo said she had to leave, and they hugged goodbye. The two sets of brothers and Bobby decided that it was also time for them to go. They took two cars so that Castiel could drive his brothers back to Adam and Anna's house. Bobby told them that he was heading home, and took Sam with him.

Castiel drove because he felt that that Dean was a bit too emotional for operating heavy machinery. Balthazar and Gabriel were both sad about Ash, but in the end there weren't as close as Dean and Castiel were.

The radio was on a low volume. Castiel looked at Dean, who was staring out the window. He felt bad, he wished he could help him more than he was already. The car was too quiet for Castiel's liking, so he started a conversation with his brothers.

"So, Gabe, Balth, how's everything going over with Anna and Adam?" Castiel asked, looking in the rear-view mirror. They both shrugged.

"It's boring." Gabe replied in a tired voice.

"Boring isn't so bad." Castiel returned. Gabe groaned and leaned his head against the window.

"I keep telling him it would be less boring if he asked you-know-who-out." Castiel laughed when heard Gabriel groan again.

"I'm sure whoever it is would say yes, Gabriel." Dean spoke up. Castiel looked over and saw Dean smiling. His stomach clenched at the sight. God, I love you.

Gabriel sat up and looked between Dean and Castiel. "Wait, what?" Gabe asked startled. "What do you know? Oh my god, you guys told him." Gabriel's face flushed as he used his hands to cover his eyes. Everyone started laughing.

"I promise I didn't tell Sam anything." Dean told Gabe. In return Gabe just whimpered and put his head down.

"Let's all just act like none of this happened." Gabe said.

"Alright, but I was serious about what I said before." Castiel noticed Gabe look up briefly with hope in his eyes.

When they arrived the the foster home Castiel said goodbye and that he's see them later, along with the "if anything happens, don't hesitate to call me" line. Dean waited in the car, but also gave a short goodbye. Castiel made sure his brothers got in then started to drive. Dean was silent and seemed a little off.

"Are you okay?" Castiel asked not able to hide the concern in his voice. Dean didn't say anything for a moment.

"Did you and Ash ever go out?"

Castiel nearly veered off the road when he looked at Dean. His eyes were wide and filled with confusion.

"What? No. Why would you ask that?" Castiel had to look back at the road in front of him. He noticed Dean shrug his shoulders our of the corner of his eye.

"I don't know, you guys were pretty close. I remember you also went out in like the middle of the night with him not to long ago, I mean it was before we got together. Also we used to." Dean answered.

"What do you mean?" Castiel asked.

"In the middle of the night you-"

"No, Dean, the other part." Castiel clarified.

"Oh, Ash and me, we, uh, used to date. You didn't know?" Castiel shook his head. "Well I mean it's not like it really meant anything. I think Ash was, you know, exploring his sexuality or something. It was Freshman year." Dead added. "Lasted like a couple of months."

"Why are you telling me this?"

Again Castiel saw Dean shrug. "I don't know," he started, "seemed like something to say." Castiel shook his head. His mind flashed back to how Dean reacted when he found out about Ash's death. Stop.

"Did you," stop, "love him?" Castiel didn't know why he asked the question, and once the words were out of his mouth he immediately regretted the question and feared the answer. Dean turned from the window to face Castiel.

"Yeah." Dean replied. Castiel's heart nearly stopped. "But not like I love you. It was a mutual break-up, Cas. There wasn't any romantic feelings between us, purely platonic. Definitely nothing like you and me." Dean reached across the arm rest and held Castiel's hand. "I promise, darling." Castiel blushed and looked down and their intertwined hands. Dean stared at Castiel's face.

"What are you doing?" Castiel asked.

"Admiring the view."

Castiel shook his head and drove the rest of the way home with his hand holding on to Dean's.
