(This oneshot is something a bit different to usual, but the idea came to me so thought I would give it a go!)
Jacob was laid on his back, one arm wrapped around Connie, who was on her side, with her head resting on his chest, her legs intertwined with his.
They had been like that for the last half an hour, cuddled together in bed watching the small television on the wall of Connie's room.Jacob picked up the remote and turned the television off.
"Close your eyes" he told Connie.
Connie lifted her head from Jacob's chest and looked at him. "What?" She asked, confused by his strange request.
"Just close your eyes. Trust me" he smiled reassuringly.
Connie frowned, but she placed her head back down and let her eyelids shut.
"Imagine it's 20 years into the future" Jacob said.
"Ok..." Connie said, unsure where this was going.Jacob looked down at Connie to check that she had her eyes closed and then continued.
"Imagine we have a daughter. She's 18. She's got brunette hair that tumbles down to her shoulders in perfect curls, and her eyes are a beautiful shade of brown. She looks just like you, she's beautiful.
One evening, she walks into the kitchen, and she sits down in the chair opposite you at the table.
She tells you about a boy she likes and you smile because she looks so happy. She tells you all about him for a while, then stops and blushes with embarrassment when she realises how much she's been going on about him. But it just makes you smile more, as you wonder where the years went and when she got so grown up.
She asks you for advice - how do you know when you have found the one? You pause to think. You tell her that, you'll just know when you have, and a big smile forms on your lips as you're thinking of me.
She notices how happy you are and she asks you how we met - she wants to hear the story of how her mum and dad fell in love.
So you go back to the start, to the very first time we met, and you tell her.
Now imagine she's right here, next to you, and you're telling her now...what do you say?"Connie was smiling as she tried to form a picture of the daughter Jacob had described in her mind.
She paused for thought as she took herself back to that day, the day she first saw Jacob.
"I say...the day I met you began as an ordinary day. I was getting on with my work, just like any other shift.
I pushed open the doors to resus and I saw you standing there. I couldn't take my eyes off you. The first time that my eyes met yours, they didn't want to be pulled away from your gaze.
It had been a while since anyone had caught my eye like you did.
I tell her how surprised I was when you impressed me with your medical knowledge and experience - you just didn't seem the type. You certainly knew your stuff though and I realised that perhaps someone like you, may be an excellent asset to my team.
I tell her that I couldn't stop sneaking glances at you as you moved around the department. I tell her about your cheeky remarks and how much I secretly enjoyed them, but always masked it with a disapproving look.
I tell her that I was a different person before I met you. I had walls built up around me that I refused to be broken down. I didn't do 'love' and when I felt myself falling for you I needed it to stop. I refused to let my feelings show and I refused to let you in.
But I still remember how my heart stopped when you fell to the floor beside me as the shot hit your arm. I was so scared that I was going to loose you and I couldn't bare the thought. That day, helped me realise that no matter how much I suppressed my feelings for you, they were never really going away.
I tell her about our first kiss. The feel of your lips against mine, that it was everything I had longed for since we first met. The relief that filled my body as I finally allowed myself to surrender to my feelings.
I tell her that I forgot your birthday once, and the guilt that weighed on my mind until I found the perfect gift for you.
I tell her that you never failed to make me feel like the luckiest woman alive. Everyday, you made me smile. You made me so happy, true happiness that I had never experienced before.
I tell her about the day I asked you to move in with me, so that everyday I could wake up in your arms and feel the warmth of your skin on mine.
I tell her about the huge smile on your face and the way you picked me up in your arms when I told you I was pregnant. The way you stroked my bump everyday, the way you talked to our unborn baby every night.
I tell her how happy we both were when we saw her beautiful face for the very first time as we held her delicate body in our arms.
Finally, I tell her that I'm so lucky to have met you. That I wouldn't be the person I am today without you. You were the person who taught me that it's ok to follow your heart.
I tell her how much I love you.
I love you in a way I never knew possible.
What I do know, is that I will always love you."Jacob let a moment of silence pass before he spoke.
"So you finish telling her your story and she's hoping that one day, she can have a happy story just like her parents.
She soon leaves, because she's going out with the boy that she was telling you about earlier.
You say goodbye, and then goodnight - because she's staying out late and you tell her that you probably be in bed when she gets home.
You're right, and when she arrives home at 11:30, you're already in bed but I'm waiting up for her in the living room. I smile when she comes in and sits down next to me.
She asks me if I believe in finding 'the one'.
I think about it. I tell her that one day, you will meet someone and you will feel happiness like you've never felt before. And the right person, they can change your life.
I tell her that sometimes, it's the most unexpected series of events that can bring two people together.
She asks me if that's what happened when I met you and I tell her that it was.
She says that earlier, you told her the story of how we met and she asks me if I will do the same.""And what do you tell her?" Connie whispered.
Jacob paused momentarily as he took himself back to the day he first saw Connie.
"I tell her, about the unexpected circumstances that lead me to the hospital in the first place, how crazy it is, that without the events of that day, we never would have met.
I tell her how I charged into resus and instantly annoyed most of the staff with my arrogant nature.
I tell her, that when I saw your face for the first time, I learned what perfection really looked like. Never before had I seen someone so beautiful.
I tell her how I loved to irritate you by following you around the department, refusing to address you by 'Mrs Beauchamp', no matter how many times you corrected me.
I tell her that at first, you rejected me. But that it wasn't going to make me give up. Because you were worth the wait, and I would have waited a lifetime for you.
I had seen the way you glanced at me when you thought I wasn't looking. That smile that you always tried to hide from me.
I tell her that there was a rule that I always stuck by: I never asked twice.
That was until I met you.
I tell her that when I got shot, it was you that saved my life and without you, I wouldn't be here, for that I'm eternally grateful.
But that day brought us closer together, and I know it made you realise that you didn't want to loose me. I saw the scared look on your face and heard the worry in your voice as you desperately tried to stop the bleed - you were finally beginning to allow your true feelings to show.
I tell her about our first kiss, when you finally let me in. I still remember the feel of your hand placed gently on my face and the feel of your delicate lips on mine.
That kiss, was just the start.
I tell her that I fell a little bit more in love with you, with every passing day.
I loved the way your eyes crinkled when you smiled. I loved the sound of your delicate laugh that never failed to make me smile.
I loved how stubborn we both were and the times when we both refused to back down in an argument.
I tell her, how our relationship only grew stronger every day.
I tell her that the day she was born was one of the best days of my life. The first time I held her tiny body in my arms, it taught me another kind of love.
Finally, I tell her how much I love you.
I tell her that words can't describe the way I feel.
But I do know, that I will always love you, forever."They let the silence occupy the room for a moment.
Connie opened her eyes and lifted her head from his chest.
Jacob opened his and looked into her eyes.
They smiled at each other.
Neither wanted to let this special moment go. It was something they would cherish forever.(This idea sounded a lot better in my head so apologies if it's not very good😉)
