It was already close to midnight when Hye Jin had finished her homework. It was her first year in college, and unfortunately, it was completely different than what she had expected. Feeling accomplished, she switched off the lights and collapsed onto her bed, flinging her face into the soft, heavenly pillows. She flipped onto her side and let out a small groan as she stretched her arms, letting loose all the stress that had piled up that day. Her feet were a tad too chilly, her body too hot, and her face uncongenially tingly.
The warm air inside her room was almost suffocating. She finally came to the conclusion: it was far too hot to sleep. She lay flat on her back, staring up at the plain white ceiling that made a flimsy attempt to fabricate the endless pitch black sky that embraced the stars. She could feel the thoughts crawling up her arms, to her neck, and into the depths of her mind. In fact, she had no idea what day it was. Was it Monday? Or was it Wednesday? All she wanted to do was sleep, but with her entire body laced in a sticky, undeveloped sweat, she'd rather sleep in the fridge. Another reason she hated summer. She wasn't exactly in love with Maryland's weather.
She fidgeted with her phone and managed to turn it on, momentarily blinding herself. Once her eyes adjusted, she read the time. It was exactly twelve in the morning. She shut the phone off, letting the darkness swallow her once again. Then, all of a sudden, her phone vibrated once, twice, thrice. She fumbled in the dark and seized her phone, letting out a meager curse. Who was calling at such a time? It was Jungkook. An unconscious grin sprouted across her lips. She felt her cheeks flush immediately as she answered the call. It was Jungkook for sure- his sleepy voice was to die for. It had been over two years (nearly three) since they had begun to date. And still, every single conversation to her was foreign, exhilarating, breathtaking, intoxicating. Sure, the long distance relationship thing was a bit troublesome, but it was bearable. She wouldn't dare have anyone else. She accepted the skype call eagerly.
"Babe," came the sleep drugged voice from the other side.
"It's two in the afternoon for you, shouldn't you be at school?" Hye Jin questioned with a quiet chuckle.
"I didn't skip, I swear. It's a Korean holiday! That aside, do you know what day today is- for us?" His voice was a bit clearer this time as he rubbed away at his eyes.
His dark brown hair was a mess, and the bags under his eyes seemed to dominate his face. It was adorable in a way, everything that made up the masterpiece that was Jungkook. He was draped in a black hoodie, positioned against a few pillows, and decorated with his beautiful signature smile. He gazed into his phone with a heartwarming, yet drowsy smile. An ocean of lethargic light flooded the room, automatically triggering a small groan as he shielded his eyes. He proceeded to rub at his chin, picking at a bruise that seemed a few days old. It was a strange habit of his, something he usually did when he was nervous. His skin was marked with scars and bruises, although they were barely visible. Just another reason Hye Jin loved him; he was a flawless guy with flaws. He cocked his head to the side like a curious pup, scratched his nose for a second, and proceeded to tap at the screen, impatiently waiting for an answer. He was literally a child trapped in the body of a twenty year old. Hye Jin's mouth formed a shocked 'o' as she blinked twice, trying to recall what he had even asked her. She couldn't pull her eyes away from the screen, for she was still unable to completely take in the amazing man in front of her. There was an innocent laugh from the other side.
"Babe, what day is it today?" he repeated, a bit louder this time.
"I don't know, Monday? Tuesday in Korea?" Hye Jin mumbled softly, slyly angling the camera away from her features. The call had caught her off guard and she had no time to tame her hair, which looked like that of a rag doll.
He laughed gently and shook his head, motioning for her to turn the screen back to her face.
"You're beautiful no matter what, princess. On the other note, I have something for you before you head to bed."
