The school term had been over, and we had a week off for finals.  I would only have to come in the days that I would take my subject tests and leave, which was only three tests in two days.  The Friday of that week would be the day I went to pick up my new program and leave.  At least I had days off from school; I'm getting so sick of this place already.

I had gone super early to the bus that day so I can get it over with and come home to do my own thing; it's the school's fault that I have to wake up earlier than usual anyway.  I ended up being a little less than 20 minutes early.  I walked down the private road the school had situated for us, passing through the gate with my earplugs in.  I knew I would probably have to wait outside for the full 20 minutes, and I had no problem with that.  I was the first one there as it seems, so I can just think alone, something I love.

When I reached the front of the school, he was right there, sitting patiently.  I had guessed he would be early; I thought I saw his distinct shaggy black hair crossing the street through the bus window.  And now there he was sitting in the flesh.  Unknowingly, my heart was beating a little faster.  I had stopped short when I was a few meters away from him.

He looked up and smiled at me.  But it wasn't in that sweet way you would think; it was that teasing 'Oh-are-you-early-too?' smile that almost looked like a smirk I wanted to wipe off his face.  Without words or a simple gesture, I sat down next to him on the bench.

"Early bird, huh?" he asked.

"Didn't expect to see you here now," I said.  "You never sleep during the school year, and you have a vacation to sleep all day, yet you still come early,"

"My parents wake me up early every day anyway, it doesn't make a difference," he answered with a shrug.  "I still have homework to do, I'll get it done today."

Silence followed, an awkward silence at that.  This was our relationship.  Our mothers know each other from their jobs, and had practically pushed us together.  We became somewhat friends, did a project together for history, and only communicated during periods we have together, which was only 3 classes.  Ironically, I sat next to him in 2 of them, the other one beig gym where we would play badminton with a bunch of our other friends too.  Our relationship was mostly based on insulting each other and teasing each other.  My best friend had been shipping us since she saw us doing the project together with her in our group.  She hadn't said anything, but my other guy friend started it.  It spread like wildfire throughout the freshman high school grade.  He knew about it, and chose to ignore it and just let it be, while I got the teased end of the stick from everyone.  Nonetheless, our relationship wasn't exactly gentle or hostile, it was just more teasing than anything.  I would probably call him to save me from falling off a cliff, but probably not the first one I would call.  He would probably not even call me, but that's ok.

It was a pitiful relationship, but a friendship nonetheless.  Unfortunately.

"Say something," he spoke up.

"What do you want me to say?" I asked.

"Anything, I'm bored," he whined.

"Well, why can't you say something?" I pointed out.  "Why is it always me?  Or are you too 'antisocial' to do anything?"  Those were his words during the rare times we text that wouldn't last long because he wouldn't respond after we reach a dead end.

He frowned at me.  "Shut up.  How much time do we have?"

I looked at my phone.  "15 minutes."

He groaned.  "I'm going for a walk."  He got up and started making his way down the road towards the gate.

I felt a little lonely now, which was rare because I would usually crave the solitude.  I watched his leaving back thoughtfully, before pulling a book out of my bag to read.  10 minutes later, since there were quite a few early risers, they let us in early.  I had texted him to get his 'sorry ass back here' and to hurry.  He came back shortly after that.
