Chapter Seventeen

A/N: Sorry for the lack of updates but I'm much better now so chapters will be posted regularly again.

Jake's POV

I hated being back in my dorm room. I missed Gabe fiercely and wished I was back at his home. I was happy to be almost fully healed though. I'd managed to catch up on my college work and had finished an assignment for Professor Miller. He'd heard about the attack on me and was relieved to know that the attacker had been identified. Unfortunately he still hadn't been apprehended yet.

I sat in Miller's class room, my mind often wondering to thoughts of Gabe, and wrote down the notes written on the board. We were excused and I made my way to Wesley who'd sat on the other side of the room. He'd been very down since Tonya had made her decision.

She had gone home with her parents and was planning to put the baby up for private adoption. Wesley was heartbroken and none of us could console him. In time he would come to see that it was the best thing for him. He wasn't ready to be a parent.

"Jake, Wesley, can you both please see me before you leave?" Professor Miller asked while sitting behind his massive desk. Wesley and I looked at each other before walking to the front of the class. "How have you both been doing since the attacks? Any word on the attacker?"

"No there's been no sightings of him. He can't have vanished though so I hope he'll be caught soon," I told him. "I'm feeling much better. My boyfriend made an appointment with a therapist for me. He thinks it'll do me good to talk about the attack." I was dreading it. I wasn't having bad dreams or feeling threatened by shadows but he insisted that it would help me.

"That's a very good idea. Even if it hasn't all hit you yet it'll help if you talk about it. Are you seeing a therapist too?" He asked Wesley.

"No. I can't afford therapy. What's the point anyway?" Wesley turned his back on us and walked away.

"I'm afraid he might be slipping into depression." Professor Miller observed.

"I think you could be right. He hasn't been himself for a few weeks now." I frowned at the door Wesley had walked through.

"Do you think you could talk him into seeing a therapist if I could set something up for him?"

I turned and looked at the professor. "Why would you do that?"

"Because I'm not one of the cold and impersonal professor's that teach here. My close friend is a therapist, he'll be hiring my son as soon as he graduates next year. I'm sure either one would be willing to help out a young man who's obviously in need," he said.

"You have a son who's graduating next year? You don't look old enough to have a son my age," I asked shocked.

Miller laughed, "Thank you, I'm actually forty-five." He'd always dressed like an older man but he'd never looked that old. I guessed he had good genes. "I'll talk to Benjamin and my son, Tom, and I'll let you know when one of them can see him."

"Thank you sir." I gave him a smile and said goodbye. I was still amazed that he was in his forties.

I hurried across campus to catch up to Wesley. "Wes," I called when I caught sight of him. He turned to look over his shoulder and I could see him sigh before he fully stopped and turned to face me. "What was that about" I gestured toward the building we'd just exited to make my point.

"What?" He shrugged. 

"Professor Miller was just trying to be nice to us. He's actually one of the nicest professor's we have so why were you talking to him like that?" I could feel my anger rising but it would just make things worse if I let it out. Wesley was beginning to push us all away but we were determined to fight him on that. He'd been through a lot more than I had been lately. He'd been beaten up several times, his mother had kicked him out and was refusing to see him or speak to him. His wedding had been over before it had begun and he'd lost the baby he'd had his heart set on. That was a lot for one person to process in such a short amount of time.
